Hillwood blends charm, seclusion and community spirit
Southern charm and hospitality are alive and well in Hillwood. In this secluded enclave at the heart of Montgomery's midtown section, neighbors stop to say hello, whether they're getting in a morning jog, taking a leisurely stroll on the sidewalk-lined streets or tending to their well-manicured lawns. Joggers and walkers hit the pavement of the neighborhood's long, wooded streets in the mornings and evenings. Area kids like to ride their bikes around after class. The neighborhood has Flock security cameras installed, which not only record the goings-on in the neighborhood but also capture vehicle makes, colors, types, license plates, and other unique details. This has given residents a greater sense of safety and security and aims to prevent crime.
Craftsman-styles and ranch-style homes fill the neighborhood
Hillwood is a historic subdivision made up of brick craftsman cottages and single-story ranch-style houses, as well as historic homes with character and new constructions. Homebuyers also get a lot more for their money than they would in other Montgomery neighborhoods, as home prices in Hillwood range from $185,000 to $465,000.
Students can attend Montgomery County schools or Montgomery Academy
Two Montgomery County Public Schools are close to the neighborhood. Vaughn Road Elementary School, which receives a C-minus rating from Niche, is to the southeast, and Flowers Elementary School, which holds a C, is to the north.
Also within the area is Montgomery Academy, a K-12, co-ed nonsectarian school that's been serving the community since 1959. This school requires students to apply to be admitted and pay tuition. Scholarships and other financial aid are available to families that qualify. The school has a strong emphasis on STEM. Students start by learning basic computer skills and progress to web research, digital art, slideshows, programming and more. The arts are another big part of this school. There are musical instrument, visual arts and theater programs, but the main focus is its stellar choral program. Students in the Choral Academy have performed at state conventions, been featured with the New England Symphonic Orchestra at Carnegie Hall and gotten to tour across the country. Additionally, the Montgomery Academy Speech and Debate Team is among the best in the southeast. They have consistently been ranked in the top 1% of speech and debate programs in the U.S. by the National Speech and Debate Association and won the Leading Chapter Award from the NSDA four times. The academy hosts STEAMfest each year at their Lower School campus. The free event is open to the community and designed to engage elementary school children in hands-on science and art activities.
Vaughn Road Park provides fresh air and green space
Serving as a focal point for the community, the easygoing Vaughn Road Park offers tennis courts, walking trails, a large playground and plenty of space for community gatherings.
Zelda Place offers shopping and a variety of local dining
Zelda Place is the place for local shopping. With restaurants, a Denson's Boutique, a yoga studio and a Publix Supermarket, Hillwood residents have everything they need right next door. For Mexican food staples and happy hour specials in a colorful cantina setting, locals head to La Zona Rosa. Cork & Cleaver is a family-owned gastropub with a great beer selection and tasty entrees. New York flavor meets southern hospitality at Chappy's Deli, which offers classic deli sandwiches and hearty breakfast items.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
