South Hull
Suburban Neighborhood in Montgomery, Alabama
Montgomery County 36105, 36106
Historic homes with varied architecture
South Hull housing styles reflect the World War II era in which many were built. Construction began in 1940s to accommodate families living at nearby Maxwell Air Force Base, but some options date back even further. “The neighborhood has historic homes from the 1800s,” says Jones. “Some have been renovated, but a lot are still standing.” The neighborhood has a variety of architectural styles ranging from traditional Cape Cods and gable-roofed ranchers to classic Colonial Revivals. Although there are no sidewalks, children can play in the large, grassy lawns found throughout South Hull. Housing prices begin at $80,000, with newly renovated residences topping out at $200,000.Multiple community parks
Residents can enjoy the multiple community parks found throughout the neighborhood. At LeGrand Park, Spanish moss-draped cedars and sycamores surround the circular sandstone fountain located at the center. Also found in the park is the “Oklahoma Survivor Tree,” which was grown from an American elm acorn recovered from the site of the Oklahoma City Bombing. In the summertime, families head to nearby Cloverdale Park to catch a nightly concert or picnic under the gazebo. The Downtown Branch of the YMCA sits north of the neighborhood and offers indoor recreation ranging from basketball to personal training programs.Schools in the Montgomery Public School District
The Montgomery Public School District serves the area. Younger students begin their education at Nixon Elementary and Bellingrath Middle School, both of which scored a D-plus rating on Niche. Older students can attend Sidney Lanier High School, famous for its Gothic-revival style architecture. Sidney Lanier scored a C-minus rating on Niche. To the north of the neighborhood, Alabama State University is a public HBCU and offers higher education with Division-1 athletics.Community Engagement
The South Hull Historical District Association (SHDA) brings the community together with numerous events and monthly meetings. SHDA provides opportunities for residents to be active in their community and creates a vital link between the neighborhood, politicians, and city services. The SHDA seeks to sustain the housing infrastructure of South Hull and foster positive relations among the residents. Residents can also head to the Fairview Farmers Market to peruse the wide variety of baked goods, fresh produce, and homemade food items. The market is open seven days a week and is a great place to support the area’s local businesses.Easy access to Interstate 65
Fairview Avenue runs along the neighborhood’s northern border and connects to Interstate 65, granting commuters easy access to the greater Montgomery area. Public transportation is also viable, as multiple bus routes are scattered throughout South Hull. Montgomery Regional Airport is just 8 miles away for those looking to travel.Head to Derk’s for hand-cut steaks
The neighborhood’s main commercial area is the Faircourt Shopping Center, and residents can shop for fresh groceries and produce at the Meat City Market. Nearby in the Old Cloverdale District, Derk’s Filet &Vine offers hand-cut steaks, sliced Boar’s Head meats, and over 15,000 bottles of wine. “Derk’s really is a favorite amongst the locals,” says Jones. In the morning, residents can head to Greg’s Breakfast Bar for the tasty breakfast plates and famous crispy Salmon Croquette.
