An eclectic mix of homes with park access west of Downtown Montpelier

Carved into a hill overlooking the Vermont State House’s golden dome, the neighborhood of Park West not only provides vistas of Downtown Montpelier but offers a richly diverse housing stock that imbues the suburban enclave with charm as well as proximity to the capital’s sprawling Hubbard Park. “Park West is made up of pockets of distinctly different neighborhoods, but the central part of the neighborhood is Hubbard Park,” says Montpelier native Tim Heney, owner and principal broker of Heney Realtors. “Park West is on the west part of the park, and a lot of the smaller neighborhoods have properties that back into the park. People just love it.” In addition to the quaint homes and easy park access, residents are drawn to the established neighborhood for its engaging community. “Park West has that classic suburban neighborhood feel,” Heney says. “It’s a great place to live because it has the best feel for neighbor dynamics. People always interact with each other.”

Hikes and recreation at Hubbard Park

Park West’s crowning jewel is its proximity to Hubbard Park, the city’s largest recreational outdoor space. “Hubbard Park is a lovely, wooded park in the middle of town that exceeds 200 acres,” Heney says, adding that its trails, historic tower and picnic areas are popular among residents. At 54 feet tall, the stone observation tower stands at the highest point of the park, offering a perfect perch to enjoy the surrounding views of the city and Green Mountains. Folks hold summer cookouts and picnics at the numerous pavilions, hikers wander the 7 miles of trails that snake through the park’s lush setting, and kids flock to the sledding hill when snow falls. Recreationists may also head to Challenger Memorial Park, which sits adjacent to Montpelier High School, just south of the neighborhood. The waterside park offers access to the paved Montpelier Bike Trail, a path popular for walking and biking along the Winooski River. The memorial park honors the space shuttle disaster from 1986 with a granite statue.

Diverse architectural styles create a charming suburban community

A broad mix of architecture sets Park West apart from its adjacent Montpelier neighborhoods. Ranging from stately foursquare and Victorian examples to quaint cottages and Cape Cod styles, Park West’s housing stock spans almost 200 years, with its oldest homes dating back to the early 19th century. “The more you go up the hill, the more suburban it feels, and you can see how the architecture evolved over time,” Heney says. “What you get is the older Victorian and substantial, wonderful old homes on Bailey Avenue from the 30s and 40s, then further up a lot of housing built during the 50s and 60s, and then split-levels and raised ranches that were popular during the 60s and 70s.” He adds that lots in between the established homes have been filled in with newer, contemporary-style homes, many of which sit further back with more acreage. Prices for real estate can range from $310,000 for smaller cottages to $930,000 for a more recently built home situated on a larger lot. The sloped terrain of Park West also grants each property its own unique view. “Since the homes go up the hill, they each have a terrace with their own space,” Heney says.

Convenient access to shops and restaurants in Downtown Montpelier

Park West residents need only go down the hill into Downtown Montpelier to access a variety of local shops, restaurants and additional entertainment. The heart of the capital teems with charming boutiques, gift shops and specialty shops, including Bear Pond Books and Splash Naturals Boutique, that reflect the community’s small-town feel. An amalgam of local businesses and stores line Main Street, tucked among attractions such as the Montpelier City Hall Auditorium Arts Center and Savoy Theatre. On State Street, locals may visit the Vermont Historical Society Museum before crossing the street to enjoy prime cuts at J. Morgan’s Steakhouse. Other popular dining spots include Yellow Mustard, which serves stacked subs, and Capitol Grounds, a cozy café with a blended menu of specialty coffee drinks and craft draft beers. The Shaw’s on Main Street fulfills grocery and pantry needs.

Local vendors at the Capital City Farmers Market

Every Saturday from May to October, Montpelier residents gather in front of the Vermont State House for the Capital City Farmers Market. A showcase of local talent and goods, the market features a few dozen vendors that sell their produce and handmade goods, from fresh flowers and vegetables to jewelry and more. The city also hosts a variety of seasonal events, such as a Third of July celebration and summer concerts at Hubbard Park.

Highly rated academics at Montpelier Roxbury Public Schools

Park West students are zoned to attend Montpelier Roxbury Public School District, which is ranked the fifth-best school district in the state. “Montpelier has a good reputation for schools because we’ve invested well in them,” Heney says. Union Elementary School serves prekindergarten through fourth grade, and Main Street School serves fifth through eighth. Students may complete their education at Montpelier High School, which sits just south of the Park West neighborhood and offers a Flexible Learning Pathway Program and Community Based Learning Program. “Since the high school is on that side of town, a lot of kids up there walk to school,” Heney says. All three schools maintain A-minus grades with Niche.

Connections to Burlington via Interstate 89

Park West is close to both Interstate 89 and Route 2, which are major thoroughfares of Montpelier. “Park West is in the northern part of town, so if you don’t work in Montpelier, it’s an easier commute to Route 89 because you don’t have to go through Downtown,” Heney says. Burlington and the Burlington International Airport are about 40 miles away via I-89. The Montpelier-Berlin train station, located just south of the neighborhood, also offers regular Amtrak connections to Burlington and other neighboring communities.
