A leafy suburb that verges on rural at times
Montville began as an agricultural community, but it still has a naturalistic touch. It’s a neighborhood with lakes, curving tree-lined lanes and a small commercial strip. “We have a little bit of a downtown,” says Frank Cooney, a Realtor with Century 21 and the former mayor of Montville. “But overall, Montville still has a rural feel to it. One of the reasons people love it here is because of its proximity to New York City. Commuters can get there by car or bus.” Add in highly ranked schools and what results is a classic suburban haven, bordered by Interstate 287.
Million-dollar homes and condos in the $400,000s
Homes in Montville vary widely in size and price. They’re a mix of renovated midcentury properties, custom builds and new construction. Styles include split-levels, ranches and modern traditional homes. Properties tend to sit on large lots, with private driveways and well-tended front lawns. Sidewalks are prevalent throughout the neighborhood and it’s common to see people on their bike or walking their dog. For about $420,000 one can find a two-bedroom, 1,100 square-foot condo in Montville, while a 6-bedroom custom-built home with a lakefront view can run more than $1.5 million.

Rugged trails at Pyramid Mountain
Being a suburb with rural tendencies means that residents find plenty of recreation opportunities outdoors. “Montville has lots of great hiking trails and great playgrounds,” says Cooney. Pyramid Mountain offers almost 1,700 acres of rugged trails, rock outcroppings and fields. The top of the nearly 1000-foot peak offers a magnificent view of New York City’s skyline. The members-only Lake Valhalla Club presents a clubhouse and sailboat docks that are surrounded by mountains.

Casual dining at Harrigan's Family Restaurant
Having a car is essential for exploring the shopping and dining options around Montville. For example, just two miles west is a Walmart. But for those who want a smaller, more boutique experience, Montville still delivers. Makana Hoaloha is trendy boutique that features Polynesian-inspired gifts in the form of jewelry and art. Grocery shoppers have the option between Whole Foods or Kings Food Markets.
The dining scene is casual, but with a downhome feel. Harrigan’s Family Restaurant has been described as the “Cheers of Montville.” Open since 1982, this family-owned restaurant serves up cold beer and comfort food. Locando Vechhia, an upscale Italian restaurant, still manages to feel cozy and approachable, due to its location inside a converted farmhouse. A prime rib dinner at Rails Steak House is another simple but dependable choice.
Often called "the Cheers of Montville," everyone knows your name at Harrigan's.
