A quiet community with long-time homeowners and top-rated schools
The unincorporated community of Montz appears to be a sleepy village located along River Road, just 30 miles from New Orleans. Passing through the area, visitors might be surprised to learn that it was once a bustling town with a train station. Newcomers also wouldn't suspect that this picturesque landscape was the site of one of the worst railroad accidents in the nation’s history. In 1912, an excursion train filled with passengers left New Orleans on its way to Woodville, Mississippi, stopping in Montz for repairs. But a speeding freight train behind it failed to stop and nearly split the excursion train in two. Today, Montz no longer has a railroad station, but it continues to welcome new residents with its mix of history, natural beauty and excellent schools. “It’s a little community,” says Alanea Champagne, a realtor with RE/MAX who has sold several homes in the community and many more in the surrounding areas. “Most of the people that live in Montz grew up there and returned after college because of its good schools and family feel.”
Literacy programming at Norco Elementary School
Students in Montz are part of the St. Charles Parish school system and attend highly-rated facilities like Norco Elementary School, which maintains an A grade on Niche. The school offers a Family Literacy Center, which houses books and has playgroups and parent workshops to help every household member improve their reading skills. Older students attend Harry M. Hurst Middle School, which also has an A score on Niche, and Destrehan High School. The high school has received an A-minus from Niche and partners with Southeastern Louisiana University to provide college credit courses for seniors.
A day at Wetland Watchers Park
Wetland Watchers Park is located on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain, on the neighborhood’s north side. Just a few short years ago, the park's land was underwater, but thanks to local companies pulverizing masses of concrete, the debris was used to help create two-and-a-half feet of land for fishing, camping, and more. Visitors can enjoy a green space with a marsh overlook, take strolls through its nature walk and enjoy lunch atop numerous picnic areas. Residents can also take advantage of its well-used boat ramp and enjoy a day on the water. The Bonnet Carre Spillway is close by and is a family-friendly six-mile track covering various terrains, including riverbed clay and sand.
The homes of Montz
“Living in a quiet neighborhood that’s still close to the city is a big pull for clients of mine,” explains Champagne. These peaceful residential streets are lined with new traditional homes alongside contemporary-style houses, some of which were built in the late 1900s and many throughout the 2000s and into the 2020s. Lawns are kept neat here, with some using natural landscaping, thanks to larger yards found in specific community areas. It’s also worth mentioning that custom-built residences are very popular in Montz, and there is plenty of space to build. Those looking to move into the community can expect a price range from $265,000 to $350,000 depending on size and condition, while waterfront, newly constructed properties can reach up to $800,000.
Autumn traditions at Montz Pumpkin Farm
When fall rolls around, residents and their families head to Montz Pumpkin Farm. Upon arrival, guests enjoy a hayride that carries passengers to a field of pumpkins before hopping off to choose a favorite to take home and carve. Meanwhile, floats take to the roads along the Thoroughbred Avenue for the Montz Krewe Parade. Those with golf carts and ATVs can participate in the Mardi Gras-themed event that Cleve Wascom originally founded.
Eating and shopping in Laplace
To get some shopping done, residents head east into Laplace to Riverlands Shopping Center, where groceries can be picked up from Matherne’s Market at Riverlands. Next door sits a Walmart Supercenter and Dollar Tree for any retail needs. When it’s time for a meal, locals pull into Frostop Drive-In Restaurant along East Airline Highway for a classic cheeseburger and root beer float combo. Meanwhile, a finer dining experience can be enjoyed in the form of seafood from Petra Restaurant & Lounge.
Commuting from Montz
Those heading into downtown New Orleans for work or fun can reach the city in a 25-mile drive west along Interstate 10. Residents heading out for a vacation can catch their flights at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in a 12.5-mile trip along US-61. When medical attention is needed, Residents can use the same route to reach the hospital at Ochsner Health Center, 12.1 miles away. Meanwhile, those attending classes at River Parishes Community College can reach the Reserve Campus, situated off West 10th Street, just 8.5 miles west.
Refuge from rising waters
Despite being wedged between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain, the Montz neighborhood is not prone to flooding. This is ideal for residents who want to enjoy life near the water without the threat of their streets or homes flooding after a heavy rainstorm.
