What began as a one-mile town has grown into a flourishing community offering locals a place to settle down. “People come here primarily for its proximity to Lake Norman and Charlotte,” says Michelle Hovey, owner/broker at The Alexander Realty Group. Hovey, who lives locally, constantly watches market trends. “This area is growing so rapidly that if you have your eyes on a property, you should snap it up,” she says. The taxes and prices are also lower than some of the surrounding neighborhoods.
Ample yard space with budget-friendly housing
The three to five-bedroom homes here are expansive and sit on tracts of land ranging in size from a quarter acre to three-quarters of an acre, offering ample space for a playset or a dog run. Architecturally, the houses run the gambit from Cape Cod to ranch-style to modern traditional. Prices range from $300,000 to $700,00 and get more expensive closer to the lake. The streets are wide, lined with sidewalks, and the lawns are manicured.

Artificial lake is area's big draw
The major draw for residents is access to Lake Norman, which was created between 1959 and 1964 as part of Cowan's Ford Dam construction. It is the state's largest artificial body of water. The 34-mile lake, with 150 miles of shoreline, brings visitors from all over for its water recreation and bucolic setting. Lake Norman State Park boasts the Itusi Trail, a nearly 31-mile mountain biking trail. Park Lake, set off from the larger Lake Norman, offers quiet spots for fishing and paddling. Heron rookeries on two islands shelter over 25 great blue heron nests.
