Farming community in Lycoming County
Mostly consisting of farmland, Moreland Township’s tranquil landscape attracts residents looking for a slow-paced lifestyle among the hills of Lycoming County. “There is a very strong community in Moreland: we have farmer friends, Amish friends, and also some professionals that commute into Danville,” says Claudine Gellella, owner of Gellella Terra Vineyard in the township. “We absolutely love living in the country.” Although Moreland is removed from any close connection to city life, small cities a few miles outside the township like Muncy and Danville have medical facilities, shopping and dining, and the larger Williamsport is just 20 miles west.

Farmhouses sit on acres of land
Country roads wind through the hills of Moreland. Since the township is predominantly farmland, there are no subdivisions or new developments. Farmhouses and ranches are the most common house types and usually sit on several acres. How much land a property is on largely determines its price. For example, a three-bedroom ranch on a 1-acre lot may sell for under $200,000, while a farm on over 150 acres goes for close to $1.3 million. Most properties fall somewhere in between, with home values most commonly sitting between $220,000 and $320,000.
Some farmhouses in Moreland offer hundreds of acres of land.
Modest ranch homes in Moreland on smaller, acre sized lots fetch around $200,000.

Views from Gellella Terra Vineyards and more in neighboring towns
On weekends, visitors can enjoy wine tastings overlooking the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains at Gellella Terra Vineyard. “We have a beautiful view. People come out here to relax,” Gellella says. “Our base of repeat customers have become really good friends of ours.” Other than the vineyard, though, Moreland doesn’t have any shops or restaurants. Nearby Hughesville has casual spots such as Kathy’s Cafe, serving stacks of pancakes and burgers and fries in its 1950s-themed diner. For groceries, Weis Markets is about 8 miles west in Muncy.

Drive your tractor to church and events at the fire hall
Lairdsville Community Fire Company is a volunteer fire department serving Lairdsville and Moreland townships, and it also serves as a social venue for residents. “We all support the fire department. They’re very well equipped,” Gellella says. “They do food get-togethers, auctions, whatever it may be to raise money for the fire company.”
Moreland Community Church and Moreland Baptist Church hold services in Moreland. Moreland Baptist Church brings the community together with events like its Fall Festival in September, which kicks off with “Drive Your Tractor to Church Sunday.” Locals parade their equipment on Sunday morning, and spectators vote for their favorite.
Downtown Muncy hosts events throughout the year as well. Among these are monthly “Fourth Fridays” through the summer at Today Farm. Visitors can check out craft vendors and food trucks next to the farm’s goats, cows and chickens.
Moreland is home to several churches, including Moreland Baptist Church.

Fracking in the township and hospitals nearby
Moreland is car-dependent and doesn’t have any public transportation. Twenty miles south, Danville is home to Geisinger Medical Center, and UPMC Muncy Hospital is about eight miles west. The city of Williamsport is also about 20 miles west. Pennsylvania Route 118 runs through Moreland Township into Hughesville and eventually connects with Interstate 180 to reach Williamsport. Williamsport Regional Airport is about 18 miles west in Montoursville.
There are a few natural gas wells for fracking on the northeastern side of the township. In 2020, the Department of Environmental Protection served a violation to one of Range Resource’s wells in Moreland, citing groundwater contamination caused by leaking.
