About Mount Airy, MD

Growing commuter suburb near Washington D.C. and Baltimore

About 30 miles from Washington D.C. and Baltimore, Mount Airy is a growing commuter town with a mix of older homes and brand-new construction. The town itself is split between two counties: Frederick and Carroll. As a result, school zoning and taxes vary. Mount Airy residents have quick access to major thoroughfares, shopping hubs and recreation. Many people in this town commute either to D.C. or Baltimore for work. Mount Airy doesn’t have its own major employers, but Frederick County has opportunities in the healthcare field.

ADA-accessible park, converted railroad lines to hiking trails

Watkins Park is an ADA-accessible facility with a playground, trails, sports facilities and a fenced-in dog park. The town’s “Rails to Trails” system embraces Mount Airy’s history. “Mount Airy is using the old railroad track to turn it into a walking path,” says Maureen Nichols, a Realtor with RE/MAX Realty Plus of Mount Airy, who's been selling homes in the area for over 30 years. The current trail runs from Watkins Park all the way to Main Street, and future development will see the trail extend across town. There are also indoor recreation spots like the Health Unlimited Family Fitness & Aquatic Center.
