Downtown Mount Holly is surrounded by a residential landscape
Many people know the story of George Washington crossing the Delaware River en route to Trenton, New Jersey, an event immortalized by artists and historians. However, what is less known about that crossing is that it was made possible, in part, by a decoy crossing a few weeks prior that involved a different group of Continental Army troops massing in Mount Holly. The ensuing battle there served to move British troops to the area, thus allowing for Washington’s successful campaign in Trenton. Today, Mount Holly is a residential community blending historic ties to the Revolutionary War with a vibrant, modern-day downtown in New Jersey. “I think the history is probably one of the biggest draws, as well as the architecture, with a lot of older homes,” says Michael Elliott, a real estate salesperson with Fathom Realty. “The other big draws to Mount Holly are the price point and that you’re near the New Jersey Turnpike and major highways.” Commuters are within relatively easy driving distance of Philadelphia and Trenton.
High Street is the hub of Mount Holly, lined with restaurants, breweries and coffee shops just a short trek from the suburban homes surrounding it. “The heart of Mount Holly is the business district, where there are myriad stores, restaurants and the post office,” Elliott says. “Mount Holly is very walkable. A lot of people don’t need a car. You can literally go out your front door and be on High Street in a couple of minutes.”

Colonial-style homes and townhouses in Mount Holly
Mount Holly offers a wide variety of properties; some date to the turn of the 20th century, while others are as new as the 2000s. Homebuyers also have several architectural styles to choose from, including many colonial- and ranch-style homes. “There are larger, single-family, detached homes in the colonial style, but there is also a lot of attached housing with rowhouses and townhouses,” Elliott says. “Those are a bit more affordable, usually in the $200,000s and $300,000s.” Overall, townhouses can range from $200,000 to about $500,000, while single-family properties typically cost between around $320,000 and $500,000. “It’s a good price point for first-time buyers,” Elliott says.

Local dining options abound in Mount Holly
Downtown Mount Holly serves as the shopping and dining hub of the community, concentrated around High Street on the south side. The Local Eatery & Pub is colloquially known as “The Local” that serves craft beer in a bistro environment and is a dining landmark of the area. “The Robin’s Nest and The Local both have liquor licenses,” Elliott says. “Both are right off streets in downtown Mount Holly. They’re very popular, have very good food and very good service.” The Robin’s Nest serves up classic American dishes on the corner of Washington and White Streets.
Other stops include the takeout spot Donkey’s Place Downtown, which specializes in cheesesteaks, and the appropriately named Colonial Café, a coffee shop in a Colonial-era building. Stratosphere Brewing Company is a microbrewery close to Washington Street. In the northwestern corner of Mount Holly, grocery shoppers can head to the Fair Ground Plaza center, which has an ACME Markets. The shopping mall also offers Sal’s Pizza Restaurant and dessert at Kimokat’s Kitchen.

Baseball on the banks of the Rancocas Creek
Locally, Mount Holly is home to a variety of parks and other outdoor recreational sites. “There are some municipal parks and township parks,” Elliott says. “The local parks are great and easily accessible from the main roads.” Ironworks Park has three baseball fields with green space between them. Monroe Park is just west, across Pine Street, and also has several ballfields, along with a playground. Mill Dam Park has basketball courts on the north side of the creek. Creek Island Park offers a rail trail near Pine Street. Additionally, several parks sit along the banks of the Rancocas Creek North Branch, which flows through southern Mount Holly and is popular for fishing and paddling.

The Fire & Ice Festival takes place in downtown Mount Holly in early January, offering both warm food and ice carving, while the annual Mount Holly Car Show has been a tradition here for over 20 years, featuring live music, food and drinks, and family-friendly activities, along with the highly anticipated classic car show. Throughout the year, the Union Firehouse, a music venue with a full bar, hosts concerts on Washington Street. “They have a lot of events during the holiday seasons,” Elliott says. “There is always a community event happening.”

For those who choose to drive their own vehicles, access to the New Jersey Turnpike is less than 4 miles north of Mount Holly. “The turnpike is right off of Route 541, which turns into High Street in Mount Holly,” Elliott says. “It’s really easy to get to. The great thing about Mount Holly is that it’s a little town. It’s not like it has loads of traffic and congestion.” Trenton is about 20 miles north, while Philadelphia is less than 30 miles west. Philadelphia International Airport sits around 35 miles west of Mount Holly. Virtua Mount Holly Hospital is located within the community.
