100-year-old homes adorn the Borough of Mount Penn, located at the base of the majestic namesake mountain to the north and Neversink Mountain to the south.
“The homes are beautiful and historic,” says Vav Vavreck, Realtor with United Real Estate. “They are definitely a major draw for people moving to the area.” Being in the foothills, these historic homes are surrounded by mature trees that blend into the mountainsides. You’ll find American Foursquares and colonial-style homes built between the late 1800s and early 1900s. Renovated properties with 2,000 square feet of living space sell for around $250,000. Or you can get a 3,000-square-foot home for about $350,000. Similar homes without renovations go for around $150,000 to $250,000. The southern section of Mount Penn features various single-family homes from the mid-1900s, including ranch-style and split-level homes for about $175,000 to $250,000. And in the same price range, you’ll also find two-story Mediterranean homes with tile roofs and stucco siding uniquely integrated into the borough.
When you’re not enjoying the mountain views from your front porch, you can spend time outdoors at Pendora Park. You can’t miss it as you drive across the Mineral Spring Road bridge, which goes right over the park. Bring a basketball and shoot some hoops on the court or play a softball game with friends. Kids can also have fun playing on the jungle-themed playground next to the field house, where you can host events like birthday parties and baby showers.
Kindergarten through first-grade students attend Mt. Penn Primary School with a B rating from Niche. Students go on to Mt. Penn Elementary School until sixth grade and feed into Antietam Middle-Senior High School for seventh through twelfth grade. The combined middle and high school features a café in the library where students can socialize and relax.
As a primarily residential borough, you’ll find a few restaurants and retailers around Mount Penn. Enjoy classic breakfast food in a casual diner setting at Mount Penn Family Restaurant. You can also grab a breakfast sandwich or any other specialty sandwich at Jake’s of Mt. Penn, which has served the community since 1946. Shoppers can head to Antietam Plaza, which has a Dollar General and Rite Aid. You’re also just a couple miles east of Exeter Township, which has lots of shopping centers with big box retailers like Walmart, Target and many more. Or you can drive two miles west into Downtown Reading, full of shops, restaurants and entertainment.
For a breathtaking view of the city and surrounding areas, take a two-mile drive up Mount Penn to The Pagoda. “With all the houses and hills, it’s like looking down at a little San Francisco,” Vavreck says. And while you’re looking out from Mount Penn to the Borough of Mount Penn, you’ll be proud to call it home.
