Picturesque views of the Pittsburgh Skyline
Behold glittering skyscrapers and rippling waters from Mount Washington, a prominent Pittsburgh neighborhood known for offering the best views of the city. "Anybody who lives in Mount Washington, or even nearby, when friends and family come into town, they bring them here for the views," says Michael Carlin, the Executive Director of the Mount Washington Community Development Corporation. "Even though I live five-eighths of a mile from Grandview Avenue, I still feel a little bit covetous of the view," Carlin adds. Grandview Avenue is Mount Washington's main thoroughfare, offering wide-open views, striking homes, and a range of casual to high-end eateries.

Striking 20th-century homes
Mount Washington holds some of the most sought-after land in the city, with residences along Bigbee Street and Grandview and Bailey Avenues offering striking views of the Pittsburgh skyline and the Monongahela River. Many of these hilltop homes are something to behold, with opulent twin homes, Tudor Revivals, Victorians, and Colonial Revivals sitting on meticulous lawns. Due to their prime location, these homes tend to boast a premium price tag, ranging from $340,000 to over $1.3 million. Further into the neighborhood, homes vary in condition, with 20th-century frame houses, American Foursquares and Dutch Colonial Revivals dominating the landscape. Fixer-uppers can start below $25,000, while fully renovated homes can sell for over $570,000. Mount Washington is also home to the famous Chatham Village, a relic of the early 20th-century Garden City Movement with its Georgian Colonial Revival-style red brick townhomes on lots filled with trellising plants centered around a communal courtyard. These dwellings were built between 1932 and 1936 by American architects Clarence Stein and Henry Wright to bring picturesque, affordable housing to the area. Today, however, it primarily serves as housing for middle and upper-class residents. These units don't go up for sale often, but when they do, they usually sell for around $300,000.

Events by the Mount Washington Community Development Corporation
The Mount Washington Community Development Corporation is known for its annual Party on the Mount event, which celebrates local businesses while raising funds for the Washington Heights Ecumenical Food Bank. The annual event is held each fall along Grandview Avenue, drawing in thousands of visitors. "It started off years ago as a glorified block party where just neighbors showed up, but last year we had people from 28 states and ten countries," says Carlin, who's been living in Mount Washington for 29 years. "It's moved beyond a neighborhood event to a city event," he says. The Fourth of July is also a big deal for the Mount Washington community, as it boasts some of the best viewing platforms for the city's Independence Day fireworks display.
