Muhlenberg Park is a suburban neighborhood with a small-town feel. "I believe what draws people here is easy access to highways, an established corridor of commerce and the preservation of open green spaces," says Jim Bobeck, Muhlenberg Township manager. Muhlenberg Park offers residents nearby parks, trails and outdoor spaces to explore.

Rural meets suburban in Muhlenberg

Muhlenberg Park is a neighborhood that dates back at least 50 years. Most homes are ranch-style, bungalows and split levels with either brick or stone facades. Prices run from $195,000 to $490,000. The yard sizes range from 1/4 to 1/3 acre, and most homes have garages. The neighborhood has a rural and suburban vibe, with mature oak trees dotting the landscape and open spaces between houses. The streets run in a grid pattern, and some have sidewalks.

High school encourages languages and technology

Students can attend Muhlenberg Elementary Center (MEC), the largest elementary school in Berks County. MEC teaches social skills through the High 5 Initiative, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the natural environment. The school received a C from Niche. Muhlenberg Junior High School also received a C grade from Niche. Muhlenberg High School has a B from Niche and includes world languages and technology in its curriculum.

Parks and railroads

Laurelain Park is a 25-acre green space with a disc golf course and a playground. Residents can take back roads for 1 mile to get to Reading Crest Park, which has a ball field and playground. The Reading Blue Mountain and Northern Passenger Railroad, less than a mile via back roads, is a popular destination offering visitors scenic train rides using their historic and restored steam engine fleet. The railroad offers special theme rides throughout the year, including a ride with Santa Claus.

Township gets a new name

Muhlenberg was originally part of Alsace Township; however, residents in the western part of Alsace were unhappy with high taxes and the costs of maintaining roads in their part of the township. Muhlenberg Township was formed in 1851, named after Henry Augustus Muhlenberg, who was a member of one of the more prominent families of Berks County.

Fresh produce and a 24 hour diner

"This is a huge retail area with everything from big box stores to mom-and-pop shops," Bobeck says. Target is a mile-and-a-half drive via U.S. Route 222, and Walmart Supercenter is a 3-mile drive via Pennsylvania Route 12. Also nearby is Boscov's Fairgrounds Farmers Market, which sells fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and flowers. The market includes Country BBQ, Dutch Maid Bakery and San's Asian Food among its many merchants. Route 61 Diner, a 24-hour diner, is just a mile away via back roads. The restaurant serves everything from omelets to wraps, sandwiches, pasta and more. Craft 2700 is the latest addition to the dining scene. The eatery offers craft beer, unique cocktails and a full dinner menu.

The pretzel capital

"Reading is known as the pretzel capital of the world," says Bobeck. Numerous pretzel bakeries are based in the Reading area, providing employment for many residents. Bachman, Dieffenbach, Tom Sturgis and Unique Pretzel bakeries call the Reading area home. Residents have easy access to PA routes 12 and 183 and U.S. routes 222, 61 and 73. Though there are several nearby Berks Area Reading Transportation Authority (BARTA) bus stops, most residents rely on their cars. Residents drive 4.4 miles to get to Reading Regional-Carl A. Spaatz Field Airport.
