South Temple is a peaceful community where people can enjoy strolling the sidewalks and walking their dogs, "It is very community-oriented," says eXp Realtor Taj Simmons, who has sold many homes here over the years. "It's also conveniently located near shopping and dining, so you have the best of both worlds," Simmons says. Temple is budget-friendly, a good opportunity for first-time buyers, Simmons says.
Mainly single-family homes
Though there are a few condos, South Temple mainly comprises single-family homes. Architectural styles vary, depending on the home's age and location; however, there is a mix of bungalows, ranch-style and Colonial Revival. Prices here run from $188,000 to $351,000. Most backyards are ¼ to 1/3 of an acre. For $359,000, a buyer can get a 3,837-square-foot home with five bedrooms and three-and-a-half bathrooms. South Temple streets, laid out in a grid pattern, are wide and tree lined. The lawns are neat and manicured, and there are sidewalks. Not all homes have garages, so residents must park in the driveway or on the street.

Elementary school teaches kids to care for environment
Students may attend Muhlenberg Elementary Center (MEC), the largest elementary school in Berks County. MEC teaches social skills through the High 5 Initiative, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the natural environment. The school received a C from Niche. Muhlenberg Junior High School also received a C grade from Niche. Muhlenberg High School, which has a B from Niche, includes world languages and technology in its curriculum.

Ride a train or play miniature golf
Less than ½ a mile from home, locals can walk to South Temple Playground, which has a play area, picnic tables and a large open area. The Muhlenberg Township and the Parks Department offers programs and events throughout the year, including a flea market and yoga in the park. Locals can take back roads to get to Shell's Miniature Golf & Restaurant, a popular destination for all ages. It's the largest course in the state, with 27 holes. The course also features landscaping, water features and bridges. The restaurant offers burgers, hot dogs, fried chicken and more, and there is also an ice cream station. Less than 2 miles via backroads, residents can go to the Reading Blue Mountain and Northern Passenger Railroad. This is a popular destination offering visitors scenic train rides using its historic and restored steam engine fleet.
A farmers market and a diner
Residents can drive 1.3 miles via back roads to buy groceries at Giant. Boscov's Fairgrounds Farmers Market sells fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and flowers. The market includes Country BBQ, Dutch Maid Bakery and Johnny's Pizza among its merchants. "The Temple area has the most eateries in Berks County," Simmons says. Temple Family Diner has been a staple here for over 35 years. The diner offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, featuring burgers, steak, pasta, salad, and desserts. Tlacuani Mexican Restaurant Bar & Grill is a ½ mile away in Allentown and features authentic Mexican cuisine. Local chain favorites are MOD Pizza and Chipotle.

So close to Reading
Commuters drive 5 miles to Reading, where East Penn Manufacturing and Reading Hospital are the leading employers. There are a couple of Barta bus stops for those who want to take public transportation. Reading Regional-Carl A. Spaatz Field Airport is a 6.2-mile drive via Pennsylvania Route 12.
