Muir offers quiet living near Tower City and outdoor recreation
Originally built in the late 1800s to house workers of nearby coal mines, Muir is a peaceful residential area in Porter Township that’s near outdoor recreation. “There is a lot of community pride and support here in this town,” says Angie Bixler, secretary of the Tower Porter Improvement Organization. “I know the town has my back just like the way I care for the town. We do lots of fundraising events for the community and for those in need.” Tower City, located about 2 miles away, is the go-to for community events and restaurants, and Pottsville is 20 miles away.
For breathtaking views Muir residents can go to neighboring Lykens and hike up to Love Rock.

Homes have mountain views and roomy backyards
Muir’s Folk Victorian, Colonial Revival and ranch-style homes have mountain views on all sides, and some houses have views of farmland extending to the south. Houses are typically close to the sidewalk or road, but they have backyards large enough for a pool. Street parking is available, though many homes have detached garages in the back that are accessed through alleyways. The median home sale price is around $150,000, significantly lower than the national median of $440,000.

U.S. Highway 209 leads about 2 miles to Tower City, the nearest borough, and 20 miles to Pottsville, where Lehigh Valley Hospital’s Schuylkill E. Norwegian Street campus is the closest hospital. Harrisburg is a 38-mile drive, and Harrisburg International Airport is 49 miles away. Interstate 81 is 5 miles away, providing access to the rest of the region. Houses of worship here include Grace United Methodist Church and Foursquare Gospel Church.

Career readiness at Williams Valley schools
Kids can start school at Williams Valley Elementary, which earns a C-minus from Niche, and then go to the C-rated Williams Valley Junior/Senior High. High schoolers can participate in several programs to prepare for their careers. The School-to-Career Program allows juniors and seniors to leave school early to go to a paying job, as long as they’re on schedule to graduate on time. The school also offers teaching internships for those who are interested in becoming educators. The Your Employability Skills Program focuses on job preparedness by teaching topics like workplace safety and business communication.

Nearby recreation includes a playground, a swimming pool and trails
There are several parks and recreation areas near Muir. Tower City Park has a playground and sports fields for kids to burn off some energy. Near the park, the Porter-Tower Recreation Commission has a public swimming pool that’s open in the summer. Nearby, Rausch Creek Off-Road Park has over 80 miles of trails for four-wheel drive vehicles. Hiking areas are to the south, including the nearly 20-mile Stony Valley Rail-Trail, a former railroad that’s also used for horseback riding and cycling. The over 3,500-acre Swatara State Park has more trails, and it also offers kayaking and fishing along Swatara Creek.

Porter Township hosts regular events
The Tower Porter Improvement Organization hosts several events throughout the year. Tower-Porter Old Home Week has taken place each May at Tower City Park since 1950. The carnival features rides, midway games and raffles. “We also put hero banners to honor our veterans for their military services throughout the streets around Memorial Day,” Bixler says. The organization hosts Kids Fun Day in July, National Night Out in August and the Halloween Parade in October.
Restaurants in Tower City, grocery stores in nearby boroughs
The closest restaurants are along Grand Avenue in Tower City. Scotto’s Ristorante and Pizzeria serves Italian comfort food in a casual atmosphere, and it also offers takeout. O’Neals 4th Street Station Pub is a popular bar that serves Irish dishes and bar food. Muir’s residents can also buy homemade meals from the Muir Fire Department each Sunday, which they offer to raise money for the station. Williams Valley Farms offers locally sourced meat and produce. Grocery stores like Dollar General, Redner’s Warehouse Markets and Boyer's Food Market are within 10 miles.

For fresh fruits and vegetables Muir residents can go to Boyer's Food Market.
