Muldrow offers a relaxed, small-town setting close to Fort Smith
Muldrow is a rural town of about 3,400 along the Interstate 40 corridor on the eastern edge of Oklahoma. Residents enjoy a tranquil residential setting where basic needs can be taken care of without leaving the community. Yet they are also conveniently located to Fort Smith, the second-largest city in Arkansas. Muldrow is known for its top-rated schools, and its rural character is enhanced by its proximity to the Arkansas River. “It’s a laidback, very relaxed community; there’s no crime to speak of,” says Tony Venters of Greenleaf Properties, who has sold several homes in Muldrow. “You’re close to Fort Smith without the high cost of living. Taxes and homes are much cheaper.” Muldrow’s median home sale price of just over $236,000 is more than $30,000 lower than that of Fort Smith.
Ranch-style, acreage homes stand out among housing options
Midcentury ranch-style homes are the most common offering among a collection of housing styles that ranges from barndominiums to attractive homes with additional land. “Lots of nice little acreage homes, properties that are very conducive to people looking for elbow room,” Venters says. Streets are not designed to be walkable, but they are typically quiet and often shaded by mature trees. Contemporary homes in small subdivision settings offer standard features such as driveways and attached garages. Potential buyers will also find new construction in these subdivisions and elsewhere in the community. Prices generally start around $50,000 and rarely reach $300,000. Large custom homes and those with significant acreage are the exceptions, as prices for these homes can reach up to $500,000. Residents can expect hot, humid summers and moderate winters. Oklahoma is part of Tornado Alley, and the last tornado in the area was an EF1 in 2021.
Muldrow Public Schools rated best district in the county by Niche
Niche gives Muldrow Public Schools a grade of B-plus and ranks it as the top district in Sequoyah County. “I’ve never had a client complain – and I’ve been doing this 30-plus years – about the school systems in this area,” Venters says. Muldrow Elementary and Muldrow Middle schools are rated A-minus. Muldrow High is a B-rated school. The district’s P.A.W.S program (Providing Academics With Support) offers childcare before and after school, meals, tutoring and special activities for students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The high school’s speech and debate team won its 15th straight regional championship in 2025 and has won several state championships. Oklahoma offers the opportunity for students to transfer out of district, but acceptance is dependent upon the receiving district and can be affected by several factors, including enrollment limits.
