It takes a (rural) village
Twenty miles west of Lansing is Mulliken, a small township found in the middle of rolling farmlands that satisfies its community with quality local restaurants and access to exciting outdoor activities. “It’s a quiet, rural area with a small village feel,” says Nick Sandborn, the owner and an associate broker for Sandborn Real Estate with almost 20 years of experience. “Mulliken probably has around 500 people that actually live within the village center community.”

It’s more reasonable pricing,” Sandborn says. Two-story modern traditional homes and Colonial-inspired ones can range from $150,000 to $280,000. Those who want something smaller can find ranch-style homes lining neighborhood streets for anywhere between $135,000 to $195,000. These properties are usually 1,000 to 1,500 square feet and come with driveways. Out in the country, there are many farmhouses with a lot of land that go for around $240,000 to $350,000.

Centennial Acres Golf Course is 4.4 miles to the west and has 27 holes for players to practice on. Additionally, 6.5 miles north will take people to the Portland State Game Area. The publicly owned land is both a wildlife conservation and a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors can go camping, hiking, hunting and fishing along the Grand River or travel to the grave site of Chief Okemos and learn about the former Native American tribes of the area. For something more family-friendly, residents can go to Oak Park or Fitzgerald Park in Grand Ledge to let their little ones have fun on the playground area.
Comfort food at small-town restaurants
Despite its mostly rural landscape, Mulliken has a few dining and retail options that its residents can enjoy. There are several local businesses along Charlotte Street and restaurants along Michigan Highway 43. Mulliken Roadhouse offers a casual dining experience with standard bar food where residents can eat a plate of wings while listening to live music. For good old-fashioned home-cooked meals, Swedes Restaurant across the street serves savory pot roast and roast beef sandwiches. For more options, residents will travel outside the township. “Most people go to Grand Ledge for all their shopping. It has everything you need,” Sandborn says. Roughly 8 miles along M-43 will get people to downtown Grand Ledge, where there are plenty of big box stores like Walgreens and local places like Revival Collectibles and Trek Bicycle. Many get their groceries from Meijer and grab a quick bite to eat at one of the fast-food joints like Pizza Hut or Jersey Giant Subs.

The Mulliken Roadhouse is a local favorite for a great meal and a fun time.
Mulliken is less than 10 miles west of Grand Ledge, a great place for shopping and dining.

Best middle school in Eaton County
Families living in Mulliken have a few options for their children’s education. First, parents can send their little ones to Washington Elementary School and Charlotte Upper Elementary School within Charlotte Public Schools. Both have a C-plus grade on Niche. From there, students can join Grand Ledge Public Schools. Leon W. Hayes Middle School has an A-minus grade and is rated No. 1 in Best Public Middle Schools in Eaton County by Niche. Students can then round off their grade school education at Grand Ledge High School. With its B-plus Niche grade, great athletics program and nationally recognized band and choir programs, the high school offers plenty of opportunities for its students to thrive.

A highway runs through town
Since public transportation isn’t readily available in Mulliken, most residents rely on their own vehicles to get around. Michigan Highway 43 cuts through the neighborhood and helps people get to wherever they need to go. For long distances, residents can travel 10 miles to the Abrams Municipal Airport in Grand Ledge.
