Eastside offers single-family homes on Muncie’s outskirts
Eastside is a laid-back community on the edge of Muncie. Bordered by the Muncie Bypass, the neighborhood is home to the Mayfield, Eastwood and Echo Heights housing additions. “There are a lot of single-family homes out there that are very well-priced, and that’s attractive to a lot of first-time home buyers,” says Rich Lee, an associate Realtor with Re/Max Real Estate. “But on the other hand, you also might find a more mature client looking at taking advantage of the price point on that side of town.”
Small cottages and ranch-style homes with room to breathe
Midcentury builds make up the majority of the neighborhood’s housing stock, although there are some homes built within the past 10 years. The bungalows, cottages and ranch-style homes tend to be smaller but sit on larger lots with room for sheds, above-ground pools and outdoor furniture. Mature trees dot the community, but Eastwood and Echo Heights are more wooded and secluded. Homes in these additions tend to have more space than Mayfield, too. Some homes have attached garages, but it’s more likely to see carports, detached garages and street parking. Fixer-uppers can range from $20,000 to $50,000. Move-in ready homes, some of which have been renovated, can cost between $60,000 and $160,000.
High schoolers can earn college credit at MACC
Students may attend Longfellow Elementary School, which receives a C-minus from Niche, before heading to Northside Middle School, C, and graduating from B-minus Muncie Central High School. The high school offers career and technical education programs through the Muncie Area Career Center. Juniors and seniors can earn college credit and industry certificates.
Wildlife abounds at the John Craddock Wetland Nature Preserve
While Eastside may be on the outskirts of town, that doesn’t mean residents are far from parks and recreation. Hikers and bikers can hop on the Cardinal Greenway at the Kitselman Trailhead about a mile away. The 62-mile path follows an old railroad corridor. Bird watchers and wildlife lovers enjoy the John Craddock Wetland Nature Preserve, which is accessible from the greenway or Bunch Boulevard. Located in a bend of the White River, the preserve features ADA-accessible trails and boardwalks. Chambers Park is the neighborhood’s fenced-in recreational area and features a covered pavilion with picnic tables and a playground. Kids and adults alike head to Victory Laps, a seasonal Go Kart track, for high-octane thrills.
Downtown Muncie is less than 10 minutes away
Pizza King is an Indiana institution and the closest restaurant. Diners “Ring the King” from a signature red telephone at each table. Downtown Muncie is 2 miles away and has local eats and drinks. Mornings start at The Caffeinery, a cozy coffee shop with a warm atmosphere. Pubs and taverns like Twin Archer and Heorot are local favorites. Downtown Muncie also has local shops like Made in Muncie Pottery, where patrons can pick their own pieces to paint and take home. Dollar General has essentials covered. Otherwise, the closest grocery stores are Walmart and Aldi, each 4 miles away in Southside. McGalliard Road, the city’s main hub for shopping and dining, is 5 miles away.
Driving on the Muncie Bypass
Eastside residents have easy access to the Muncie Bypass, a major thoroughfare that forms a semicircle around the city. The community is car dependent, but there is a Muncie Indiana Transit System (MITS) bus stop on East Jackson Street and Hodson Avenue. Medical care is available at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, 4 miles away.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
