Forest Park is as mighty as an oak
Forest Park is a modest residential neighborhood on Muncie’s south side. After World War II, the community struggled as factories began to close. While the neighborhood has its challenges, residents worked with Building Better Neighborhoods and Studio 165+, a Ball State University student-led design firm, to create a new identity that represented the community’s resiliency and unity. Now, new signage welcomes residents and visitors to the neighborhood with an emblem that depicts a home with a fireplace within the negative space of two oak leaves — a symbol of Forest Park’s natural surroundings and steadfastness.

Most single-story homes are cost-efficient
The gridded streets are dotted with towering oak trees and lined with cottages, Craftsman-inspired and ranch-style homes. Driveways and street parking are common here, but some houses have detached garages. Most residents own their homes, but the neighborhood also has a sizable rental market. Fixer-uppers can cost between $20,000 and $70,000, while move-in ready homes can range from $70,000 to $125,000.

Local community centers and parks are nearby
Forest Park is close to two community centers, which both provide essential services, unique programs and special events. The Muncie-Delaware County Senior Citizens Center resides in the former Forest Park Elementary School. Residents age 55 and older gather for games, educational classes, bible studies and more. Ross Community Center is a hub of activity for all ages and has had several upgrades in recent years, including new sports fields in 2019. The center offers early childhood programming, adult athletic leagues, classes and community events. For outdoor fun, Thomas Park a playground, splash pad, tennis courts and a basketball court.

Downtown’s Walnut Street has local eats
The area is mostly residential, but tucked between homes is Atomic Comics Games & Music. Specializing in card games, tabletop role-playing games and more, the store also hosts tournaments, miniature painting classes and board game nights. Mornings may start at Riverside Café, a staple for breakfast in the area, or Rosebud Coffee House in neighboring Thomas Park-Avondale. “Forest Park isn’t really walkable to downtown, but it’s only a couple of miles away,” says Rebekah Hanna, a Realtor with Re/Max and area resident. “Anything on Walnut Street is good, like The Caffeinery, Vera Mae’s [Bistro], and Little Chicagos is a new Italian place that we really like.” Pay Less is the closest grocery store less than a mile away across the river. For retail shopping, most folks head to Muncie Mall or Muncie Plaza.
