Homes surrounding the 40-acre Minnetrista Museum & Gardens

From 1983 to 1994, the famous PBS painter Bob Ross filmed his iconic “The Joy of Painting” in a Muncie, Indiana, TV studio, sharing with his viewers the techniques of oil painting while always incorporating his ethos: “We don’t make mistakes – just happy little accidents.” Today, visitors at the Minnetrista Museum & Gardens can explore a recreation of his studio, view his original paintings and sign up for workshops from Certified Bob Ross instructors. The museum houses the historic home of George and Frances Ball, members of the Ball family known for founding the Ball Corporation and being the namesake for Ball State University. The museum’s regular programming includes seasonal events, a weekly summer farmers market and partnerships with local schools and charities. “We’re a museum and a garden, but we’re more than a museum and more than a garden,” says Associate Director of Communications Brea Cunningham. For the neighborhood’s residents, its 40-acre campus is an everyday oasis for enjoying a picnic lunch, an after-work stroll or a bike ride on nature trails.

Housing prices here fall just below the city average, and most sales are between $100,000 and $200,000.

The Delaware County Fair

Minnetrista is home to the Delaware County Fair, a 172-year tradition anchored by 4-H livestock shows and the annual crowning of the Delaware County Fair Queen. Minnetrista Museum & Gardens hosts events throughout the year: a weekly summer farmers market, a walk-through holiday lights display, an annual Garden Fair with horticulture demonstrations and Faeries, Sprites, & Lights, where the Oakhurst Gardens transforms into a fairy wonderland to celebrate Betty Ball’s childhood love of the enchanted. “Every year, kids dress up as fairies, and adults dress up, too! Everyone dresses up,” Cunningham says. Live actors make the fairy wonderland come to life amid live music, bubbles and games.

Brunch, a butcher shop and Amazing Joe’s Grill

Just southwest across Wheeling Avenue, Amazing Joe’s Grill is a casual restaurant known for its ribeye and tenderloin. For meats, cheeses and a small selection of produce, locals can shop at Lahody Meats in the neighborhood, and they can pick up household essentials at Dollar General.
