A library, park and neighborhood association unite this Muncie community
A mile and a half northeast of downtown Muncie, Whitely is a historically African American residential community. Its 1940s and 1950s cottages sell for prices lower than the average for the city, making the neighborhood more accessible to first-time homebuyers. The neighborhood's shared spaces, like the Muncie Public Library's Connection Corner, next door to Longfellow Elementary, and McCulloch Park, the largest park in the city, allow residents to interact with their neighbors, bonding them and forming a sense of community. The Whitely Neighborhood Association serves the area with regular meetings to discuss neighborhood improvement and monthly food distribution.

The only restaurant in the neighborhood is Unc's BBQ, a food truck on Hines Street that serves daily specials from 12 to 6 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. McCulloch Park and the John M. Craddock Wetland Nature Preserve
McCulloch Park is Muncie's largest park and a significant asset to the Whitely community. This land was donated to the city by George McCulloch in 1901 with the insistence that it be used as parkland, and that wish has been honored. Today, its rolling hills serve as the city's most popular sledding spot in the winter, but fun abounds year-round here on its two playgrounds, disc golf course, baseball diamond and basketball courts. Riverview Park is a small green space along the White River with picnic shelters, a basketball court and a playground. From this park, residents can access the White River Greenway, a 5.6-mile trail that lines the White River. Just south of Riverview Park, locals can explore the 27-acre John M. Craddock Wetland Nature Preserve, which has a large lookout pavilion amidst its mix of wetlands, woodlands and prairie. The preserve provides access to the White River Greenway and the Cardinal Greenway. This 62-mile trail connects five counties in east central Indiana. On the neighborhood's north end, Planet Fitness offers memberships for indoor exercise opportunities.

The Whitely Neighborhood Association has monthly meetings at the Union Missionary Baptist Church, where residents can enjoy a meal with their neighbors and share their ideas for bettering the neighborhood. Residents can also get to know their neighbors at the Muncie Public Library's Connection Corner next door to Longfellow Elementary. This library branch offers programming designed to benefit the community. Its after-school program incorporates STEAM, reading and art-based learning, and wellness workshops for kids and teens teach them about developing healthy habits. "The Connection Corner is located next to Longfellow Elementary, so lots of kids are there after school," says Susan Fisher, public relations supervisor at the Muncie Public Library. "We encourage kids to keep reading during the summer, so we partnered with classroom connections to have free books there that they can read in the library or take home with them." The library's staff offers technology classes and on-demand assistance. "If you have a problem with your phone, tablet or laptop, they can help you with that," Fisher says. The library serves as a cooling station in the summer months and has drop-in hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays where anyone can come in and play board games.
