The borough of Muncy is home to locally owned restaurants, while Muncy Township acts as the area’s big-box shopping hub. The open land in between is Muncy Creek, a rural township of about 3,500 people. All three are usually considered part of the same Pennsylvania community, says Patti Smay, a real estate agent with Century 21 Colonial Real Estate and a Muncy resident. However, Muncy Creek stands apart because of the availability of land and access to parks. Muncy Borough resembles a 19th-century town, and Muncy Township has developed into a contemporary suburb, but large swaths of Muncy Creek don’t look much different than when the township was formed in the 1790s.

Little League plays at Kiess Park
At Kiess Park, kids swing from the mast and poke their heads out of the portholes of a pirate ship-shaped playground. The vessel is one feature of the large playground, which includes multiple slides, a climbing wall and a zipline. Kiess Park hosts baseball and softball games for Muncy Little League, where more than 200 boys and girls play. Little League participation has fallen nationwide in recent years, but locals say it’s still strong in the Williamsport area, where Little League was founded in the 1930s. “In a lot of areas, baseball is not as popular as faster-paced sports, but here it’s still extremely popular,” says Betsy Bjorkman, a real estate agent with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services who grew up in Lycoming County. “Basically all the kids I know go out for baseball or softball.” Next to the West Branch Susquehanna River, Muncy Heritage Park and Nature Trail presents the history of the trading canal that once passed through the area through a series of artifacts and informational placards. The park is home to Fisher Pond, which acts as a habitat for wildlife such as green herons and foxes.

Festivities on the farm
In addition to selling smoked cheese, homemade jerky and eggs from its store, Today Farm & Market hosts Fourth Fridays, a premier event in the Muncy community. Attendees browse vendors in the shadow a grain silo, kids take hayrides around the farm and bands play for spectators. Fourth Fridays are held monthly between May and August; the local tradition used to happen on the streets of Muncy before it relocated to Muncy Creek in 2024. Today Farm & Market puts on other events throughout the year, including hosting live music and transforming into a haunted farm attraction in October.

Set among Muncy Creek’s rural landscape is a plant operated by a Fortune 500 company: Kellanova, formerly known as Kellog Co. The food manufacturer is a major employer in the Williamsport area, with more than 300 people working at the Muncy Creek facility, says Jason Fink, president and CEO of the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce. “They produce Pop-Tarts and Nutri-Grain Bars,” he says. “This plant is targeted for a lot of production because, within the Kellanova plant structure, it’s the low-cost producer.” Some of the snacks made at the plant may end up on the shelves of Weis Markets in Muncy Creek. It’s the closest grocery store for most residents, though homes on the north side may be closer to Wengerds Farm Market, a grocer specializing in produce and meats. Weis Markets is off Pennsylvania Route 405, a highway connecting the boroughs of Muncy and Hughesville. In between, small businesses dot the side of the road as it stretches through Muncy Creek. May’s Drive-In serves hashbrowns and hot cakes in the morning and burgers and sundaes the rest of the day. Shopping includes Cole’s Hardware and Charli Mae’s Boutique.

Spacious countryside living
Homes are clustered on the outskirts of Muncy Borough, where Colonial Revivals, Cape Cods and ranch homes typically have only a few yards of grass separating them from neighboring houses. Further outside the borough, more ranch homes, along with Colonial Revivals, sit on larger lots. Housing options vary from rows of homes on half-acre lots to houses on multiple acres of land surrounded by cornfields and cow pastures. Prices for homes near Muncy Borough usually range from $100,000 to $300,000, while houses on large lots in the countryside may cost as much as $485,000. Homes near the West Branch Susquehanna River or Muncy Creek may be in federal flood zones that require homebuyers to purchase flood insurance.

AP courses at Muncy Senior High School
Muncy Creek is part of the Muncy School District. Students attending public schools either go to Ward L. Myers Elementary School, graded B-plus by Niche, or Muncy Junior/Senior High School, which gets a B-minus. The senior high school offers more than 10 Advanced Placement courses that can earn students college credits. Both campuses are in the borough of Muncy, so some homes are nearly 15 miles from the schools.

A car-dependent community
Cars are necessary to travel Muncy Creek’s rural terrain. Interstate 180 cuts through the community, connecting it to Williamsport Regional Airport in Montoursville and the city of Williamsport, the area’s hubs for jobs, dining and events. River Valley Transit Authority operates buses that stop along Route 405 on their way to Muncy Borough and Williamsport, but homes are often 5 miles or more from the stops.
