Munroe Falls is a small city with big changes on the way

With a population of about 5,000 in 2020, Munroe Falls is the smallest city in Summit County. Most of the restaurants are locally owned, and there are two main parks that residents go to. “We’re a smaller community, but we also like to think of ourselves as a hub because all the big cities have to come through us down Route 91,” says Jenny Markovich, director of community and economic development with the City of Munroe Falls. Growth is coming to the area, with new events, businesses and improvements to downtown. “We’re just at the beginning stages of those improvements,” Markovich says. “We are hoping to, from North River Road to South River Road, called our Town Center, do some beautification.”

Subdivisions have a variety of architectural styles

Oak and pine trees surround the manicured lawns that fill Munroe Falls’ subdivisions. Many of the newer communities have sidewalks. Homes range from the mid-20th century to the early 2000s, with various styles in each subdivision. Some have ranch styles and split levels, while others embrace midcentury modern aesthetics. Colonial Revivals and New Traditional houses are also common. A single-family home can cost $200,000 to $540,000, depending on size and location. Many subdivisions also have monthly homeowners association fees. Some exceptions, like River Park Estates and Mayflower, have no homeowners association. Condos are available as well, costing $220,000 to $280,000.

State Route 91 and the bus make surrounding communities accessible

State Route 91 is one of the main thoroughfares in Summit County and goes through Munroe Falls. “We have the best city services around, and I am not just saying that because I live and work in Munroe Falls,” Markovich says. “People love, especially in the wintertime when you’re coming down 91, the moment that you hit Munroe Falls, the road is clear, and the snow is gone. Everyone is like, ‘If I can make it to Munroe Falls, I can make it home.’” Residents can also take the Akron Metro bus, which stops along Munroe Falls Avenue and SR-91. Downtown Akron is less than 10 miles away. The closest hospital is Western Reserve Hospital, less than 5 miles away. While Akron-Canton Airport is only about a 20-mile drive, many people will fly out of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, about 35 miles away.

Family-owned businesses are common in Munroe Falls

The Spice Delight, which serves Indian food, is one of the few locally owned restaurants in Munroe Falls. “People love it, I mean absolutely love it,” Markovich says. “They come from all around to go there.” At Lemongrass Grill, the menu consists of traditional Thai dishes like Drunken Stir-Fry and Malay Massaman Curry. DeCheco’s Pizza is known for its experimental toppings like pickles and white pizza. Its Munroe Falls branch opens in the summer of 2025. People also travel to Stow or Cuyahoga Falls, where eateries include the upscale Beau’s on the River. Residents can get groceries from the locally owned Cornerstone Market or the Giant Eagle in Stow. There is also a Dollar General in the city. Target, Walmart and Lowe’s are all within a 5-mile drive.

City parks and metro parks offer ample chances to get outdoors

At Guise Park, amenities include a playground, basketball court and tennis and pickleball courts. There is also a lodge that people can rent for events. Brust Park is a more scenic setting along the Cuyahoga River, with walking trails, green space and a pavilion. It connects to the Summit Metro Parks Bike & Hike Trail, which spans 34 miles. Munroe Falls Metro Park is just outside city limits. There are about 6 miles of trails for hiking or cross-country skiing that go through prairies of wildflowers and native plants. The lake allows boating and kayaking. While locals can drive to the Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library, about 1 mile away, the library also has a bookmobile that comes to the city every Monday.
