A fast-growing Edinburg suburb

East of Edinburg, Murillo blends suburban and rural living. Dusty, two-lane roads are lined with mom-and-pop taquerias, convenience stores and sprawling working ranches. But this swath of Hidalgo County, close to interstates, malls, medical centers and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, is rapidly developing with suburban subdivisions. “People like it because of the schools and because of the hospitals. It has green areas, it has good restaurants, it has places to have fun, places to shop. It’s hard to pick out just one draw,” says Angela Navarrete, a Keller Williams Realtor with almost 10 years of experience working with clients in South Texas.

Ranches, estates and single-family subdivisions

New Traditional homes, with Texas Modern, Craftsman and Spanish Colonial design details, are common in subdivisions like Oakland Village and Los Lagos. They’re newer than many of the area’s original cattle and horse ranches. Prices start close to $165,000 and climb to over $700,000 for older, retired ranches and 21st-century single-family homes. Working ranches and large, custom-built estates typically sell for between $750,000 and $1 million.
