Windlake's three lakes and local restaurants

In Wind Lake, people can live along not one but three lakes right in the center of the community. Private docks jut out onto the water, but public launches allow residents from across Wind Lake to head onto the water for fishing and boating. While lakeside living attracts many to the area, Wind Lake’s more isolated and private feel and local restaurants offering nightlife options keep locals engaged. Major thoroughfares like Waukegan Avenue run through the center of the community, connecting it with those bigger shopping centers and supermarkets. CAP Index Score gives Wind Lake a 2 out of 10 for overall crime, compared to the national average of 4.

Boating and fishing on Wind Lake, Long Lake and Waubeesee Lake

Wind Lake is the neighborhood’s namesake lake, offering 936 acres of water. “It’s not as much of a swimming lake,” says Realtor Renata Greeley with Shorewest Realtors. “It’s geared more towards pontooning and fishing.” While private docks are common along the waterfront, public launches are around the perimeter. On the other side of town, Long Lake and Waubeesee Lake are the other two lakes. “Long Lake is very interesting because it’s a smaller lake, but it’s still full rec,” Greeley says. “There’s very little parking, so you almost have to know somebody with a dock. That keeps it very private.” On land, Meyer Park’s paved walking path circles the playground and four baseball diamonds. The space hosts the Wind Lake Youth Baseball and Fastpitch Softball League.

Residential streets versus lakefront properties in Wind Lake

Colonial Revivals and ranch-style homes sit along Wind Lake’s residential streets, selling between $225,000 and $580,000. Trees in front yards cast shade over the lawns and driveways, where many park their boats while not on the water. American flags hang from flagpoles in the center of yards. Along the water, homes are a mix of bungalows, cottages and ranch-style homes selling between $300,000 and $575,000, alongside New Traditionals and custom builds ranging from $800,000 to $1.2 million. “They’re tearing down the older cottages to put in something new,” Greeley says. Properties across the neighborhood tend to offer at least half an acre. However, this space might look different depending on where people live. Away from the lakes, homes seem more spaced out and farther from their neighbors, while lakeside homes seem closer together but offer longer plots to optimize backyards with lakefronts.

Pubs and Mexican restaurants located in town

Sportsman’s Pub and Grub overlooks Wind Lake and even has its own dock and launch, so people can head there from the water. People can get standard pub fare like pizza, burgers and Italian beef sandwiches and play pool while waiting for food. While not on the water, Kelly’s Bleachers Wind Lake also serves burgers and pizzas. People can come for live music on Friday through Sunday or join one of the volleyball leagues. Sol de Mexico has red, white and green paper flags strung across the ceiling in their dining room. While Wind Lake doesn’t have its own grocery stores, Piggly Wiggly and Kwik Trip are about 7 miles away in downtown Muskego. Aldi and Walmart Supercenter are about 13 miles away in Mukwonago.

A-rated Muskego Schools attended by Wind Lake students

For kindergarten through fourth grade, Wind Lake students attend Lakeview Elementary School. After, they continue to Lake Denoon Middle School. Muskego High School has won 5 state championships in the past 5 years for sports like football, cross country, baseball and gymnastics. All three schools receive A rankings from Niche, but the high school also ranks as the 10th best high school for athletes in Wisconsin.

Taking Waukegan and Racine avenues to nearby amenities

While boating is a big part of Wind Lake culture, residents will need a car to get around. Waukegan Avenue cuts down the center of the community, linking it with bigger towns. Racine Avenue branches off in the opposite direction, connecting the community with downtown Muskego, about 7 miles away. Pro-Health Waukesha Memorial Hospital-Mukwonago is about 13 miles west, by the supermarkets. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is the closest airway, about 17 miles away.
