South Myrtle Beach offers coastal living by the beach

Ocean waves wash over the sandy shores of South Myrtle Beach. Well-known for its popular restaurants and convenient shopping malls, residents are typically close to the swaying palm trees close to the white-sand beaches and boardwalks of the city's south end. "It is such a good area because, in terms of Myrtle Beach, everything is 15 minutes away," says Joey Kerr, Realtor at eXp Realty, who has lived in South Myrtle Beach for about 15 years. "Being in a golf cart community is great, and it is a 5-minute cart ride to Surfside Beach. Everything is convenient, and we have really good food. There is always something going on at this end of Myrtle Beach, which makes it a great area to live in."

Resort-style communities with palm trees and amenities

Colorful beach houses and cottages rest on low-lying sandy lots, shaded by coastal forests and towering palms. This area is renowned for its resort-style communities, including PirateLand Family Camping Resort and Ocean Lakes Family Campground, both of which offer vacation rentals and permanent housing options. Ocean Lakes is particularly known for its golf cart parades during the holidays and nightly cruises during the peak summer season. The area's architectural styles include stilted Craftsman and New Traditional homes, with prices ranging from $100,000 to $990,000. Home prices increase based on home size and proximity to the water, as some are nearly 5,000 square feet right on the ocean. Condos cost between $60,000 and $260,000. "Typically, our residents have been coming here since they were kids," Kerr says. "They start camping, they rent a house, and then they decide to buy. That's the normal progression of people who live in Ocean Lakes."

Myrtle Beach is located in Horry County, which, like much of the East Coast, is prone to hurricanes and tropical storms that can cause high winds and potential flooding during the fall season. While average summer high temperatures mainly stay in the upper 80s, high humidity rates can make it feel over 10 degrees hotter.

Beaches, boardwalks and dog parks within a short drive

White sandy beaches stretch along the coastal housing communities, providing easy access for golf carts and bicycles to reach Surfside Beach, known as a residential beach and a hotspot for deep-sea fishing. Myrtle Beach State Park is just north, with oak trees, wooden boardwalk paths and a fishing pier. South Bark Park is a spacious off-leash area with a fenced-in pond surrounded by tall pine trees. Fuller Park features tennis and pickleball courts, along with a shady playground.

Shopping plazas, Southern cuisine and seafood with ocean views

The Market Common is one of the city's most vibrant shopping plazas. About 4 miles north, Market Common features an outdoor layout with numerous name-brand stores, such as Barnes & Noble and Anthropologie. It also has a bowling alley, a movie theater and numerous restaurants. Supermarkets, such as a Piggly Wiggly and Walmart Supercenter, are within a 15-minute drive. "Market Commons is a great young professional area in a shop, eat and live neighborhood. Murrells Inlet is like the seafood capital of the world," Kerr says. Speaking of food, Tupelo Honey Southern Kitchen & Bar offers a popular happy hour featuring fried food, biscuits, and cheesy grits. Closer to home, residents can head to the River City Café for stacked burgers and ocean views. Neal & Pam's Bar and Grill serves seafood by the ocean and is known for its karaoke nights. "There are all kinds of cool little restaurants and bars around town, which is what makes it Myrtle Beach," Kerr says. "Myrtle Beach is not about the big chains. It's all about the mom-and-pop restaurants."

Highly rated public schools with career-oriented courses

Lakewood Elementary and Socastee Middle School both earn A grades from Niche. Socastee High School receives a B-plus. Socastee High offers an Air Force JROTC program and various career-oriented courses, including web design and marketing. St. Andrew Catholic School is a nearby private option for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The Horry County Schools District provides many programs for students. While students can submit transfer requests, the district does not have open enrollment and encourages students to attend their district of residence.

Highway 17 connects neighborhoods to the airport and the RTA bus

U.S. Highway 17 is the main thoroughfare, connecting different neighborhoods along the oceanfront. Coast RTA is the city’s public bus system with stops in neighboring Surfside Beach along US-17 and Seventh Avenue. The nearest emergency room is approximately 4 miles north, located at South Strand Medical Center. About 4 miles north, the Myrtle Beach International Airport has direct passenger flights to major U.S. cities, including Atlanta, Charlotte and New York.
