Nahant offers coastal living just across the causeway
While documenting the sounds of a neighboring town in his poem “The Bells of Lynn,” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow painted a picture of cows walking along the beach in Nahant at sunset. People who live in Nahant today can still watch those sunsets every night – with or without the cows. Nahant is a small island off the coast of Lynn that’s only accessible by a causeway that cuts through the bay. In this concealed community, people run along the beach in the morning, take their dogs to Doggie Beach in the afternoon and order UberEats to their houses in the evening. Neighbors love the wide-open grassy spaces, the beaches and the secluded feel. No one can park on the street in Nahant without a resident sticker. “There’s a saying, ‘take your blood pressure before you go on the island,’” says Judi Moccia, sales specialist at Real Estate and Company and a resident of Nahant for nearly 40 years. “When you go over the causeway, you exhale. It’s like, ‘ooh, I’m home.’”

Homes here include penthouse condominiums in 19th century buildings for $375,000, contemporary houses with stone exteriors on the water for $2 million, split-entry houses for $820,000 and partially brick raised ranch-style homes for $1 million. It’s hard to find a house for sale here, Moccia says. People tend to hold onto their properties because they like the area so much. “If you’re lucky enough to live here, you kind of hit the lottery,” she says.
