About Nahant, MA

About Nahant, MA

While documenting the sounds of a neighboring town in his poem “The Bells of Lynn,” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow painted a picture of cows walking along the beach in Nahant at sunset.

“O curfew of the setting sun! … Over the shining sands the wandering cattle homeward. Follow each other at your call, O Bells of Lynn!” He was struck by the beauty of seeing the cattle walk along the shore as bells from Lynn rang through the air. These sunsets are not just a relic of Longfellow’s 19th-century life. People who live in Nahant today can still watch those sunsets every night – with or without the cows.

Nahant is a small island off the coast of Lynn that’s only accessible by a causeway that cuts through the bay. In this concealed community, people run along the beach in the morning, take their dogs to Doggie Beach in the afternoon and order UberEats to their houses in the evening. Neighbors love the wide-open grassy spaces, the beaches and the secluded feel. No one can park on the street in Nahant without a resident sticker.

“There’s a saying, ‘take your blood pressure before you go on the island,’” says Judi Moccia, sales specialist at Real Estate and Company and a resident of Nahant for nearly 40 years. “When you go over the causeway, you exhale. It’s like, ‘ooh, I’m home.’”

Driving down the causeway, the skyline of Boston is visible on the right. Homes here include penthouse condominiums in 19th century buildings for $375,000, contemporary houses with stone exteriors on the water for $2 million, split-entry houses for $820,000 and partially brick raised ranch-style homes for $1 million.

It’s hard to find a house for sale here, Moccia says. People tend to hold onto their properties because they like the area so much. “If you’re lucky enough to live here, you kind of hit the lottery,” she says.

People here golf at Kelley Greens Golf, which has golf leagues, a restaurant and memberships for both residents and non-residents. They race sailboats through the Nahant Dory Club and learn how to kiteboard at Nahant Long Beach, which has some of the best wave riding in Massachusetts. There’s a public library that looks like a historic church with its stone exterior and glass floors, and the Nahant Heritage Trail, which links Short Beach to Bailey’s Hill.

Neighbors order pizza from Seaside Pizza and eat baked scallops and fried seafood platters at Tides Restaurant & Pub. When they tire of those two, they go to either Swampscott or Marblehead. The town has a gourmet grocery store called Turnstone Market, but supermarkets like Stop & Shop and Price Rite are just over the causeway in Lynn.

Kids who live in Nahant attend Johnson Elementary School for prekindergarten through sixth grade. After graduating, they go to school in nearby Swampscott through a bus that picks them up in Nahant. The Swampscott school district has an A-minus from Niche, and both Swampscott Middle School and Swampscott High School also score an A-minus.

Nahant is located 15 miles north of Boston on the North Shore. Once you exit the island from the causeway, it’s just a few minutes to Route 1, which runs down to Boston and up to the New Hampshire border. Nahant is a special remote island with a backdrop of Boston that locals describe as a true seaside paradise.
