In the shadows of the Catskills
Located 100 miles north of New York City and 30 miles northwest of Kingston, New York, the hamlet Napanoch is a community of 1,000 residents that sits in the shadows of the Shawangunk Ridge, which towers 2,000 feet above sea level. According to Gail Vesely of Lucille Hand Real Estate, outdoor enthusiasts will relish all that there is to do in the region, including rock climbing, hiking, fishing, boating and swimming. Vesely has sold homes in the area for nearly 20 years. While the area has typically been a destination for New York City residents to relax and play, Napanoch and the rest of the region have been seeing a surge of more residents putting down roots. “More and more are moving here,” explains Sean B. Nutley of Hudson Valley Company. The area has also seen an influx of artists relocating. “A lot of creative minds from New York City (are coming here),” says Nutley. “They’re starting new businesses; new makers; new designers; new energy.” Vesely adds that while the community is growing, most residents keep to themselves.
Napanoch is also part of the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area, which focuses on the region's architecture, history, landscape, artistic heritage and environment. It also interprets the region's historical significance in the American Revolution, the Industrial Revolution and its ongoing history up to the present. This cohesive framework serves as a marketing tool for a limited number of the region's tourist attractions. An estimated $20 million is generated in economic impact annually due to events held to draw tourists. Events include historic garden tours, folk picnics and writing workshops.
Many homes in Napanoch have front lawns and spacious backyards.
