The homes of East Highland
The wide residential streets of East Highland run parallel to meticulously manicured front yards, mature oak trees and winding sidewalks that lead to cul-de-sacs, providing a suburban background for strolls around the neighborhood. “When walking your dog, you’ll likely run into a neighbor walking theirs,” says Pfeiffer. “The mornings are pretty busy with neighbors walking their pups and parents walking their kids to school.” One thing to note is the unique architecture of its homes. Well-designed Mid-20th century ranch and split-level-style homes once filled the community. However, more than half have been rebuilt into larger custom-built homes. “The homes built back then are no longer large enough for current families that want to live close to downtown,” explains Pfeiffer. However, new homeowners have carried on the tradition of creative home design, where a single street presents custom homes in styles from Tudor and new traditional to Beaux Arts and Victorian-inspired homes that feature turrets and cross-gabled roofs. These range in price from $600,000 for the community’s mid-century homes, while recently built customs reach up to just over $2 million. The views of Naperville Riverwalk
Many of East Highland’s greenspaces, including Veterans Park, are along the DuPage River. This spot is home to a veteran’s memorial, has an open green space for picnics, and provides access to the West Branch DuPage River Trail. Debatably, the most popular outdoor amenity in the area is the Naperville Riverwalk. The waterfront pathway provides sweeping views of the river and carries joggers, walkers and bikers straight into downtown Naperville.Learning in District 203
Students in East Highland have access to District 203’s highly rated schools, including Highlands Elementary School, which maintains an A-plus on Niche and is within walking distance of the community. The community’s oldest students will head to Naperville Central High School, which has also scored an A-plus rating on Niche. It is the highest-rated public high school in Naperville and is home to The Central Times, the school’s newspaper, which has won several National Pacemaker Awards, the Pulitzer Prize equivalent for high school journalism.Last Fling celebrations
“Naperville hosts all kinds of things to diversify the city,” says Pfeiffer, in reference to events like India Day & Celebration. The day event features a parade starting at Naperville North High School, and a festival at Rotary Hill, with food and live performances meant to celebrate the culture of India. A staple of the community is Last Fling, a 4-day long festival to celebrate the end of summer and ring in the fall season. The weekend includes a Labor Day Parade, a carnival for the little ones and live music all weekend long.Commuting from East Highland
Commuters heading into Chicago for work can reach downtown in a 32-mile drive via I-88 East and I-290 East or hop on the green line at the Naperville Metra stop on 4th Avenue for a 1-hour ride into the city. Interstate I-88 and I-55 also carry travelers to Chicago O’Hare International Airport, a 30-mile drive northeast. Meanwhile, visits to Endeavor Health Edward Hospital and North Central College are quick, as they are both located on the neighborhood's west side. The attractions of downtown Naperville
“We’re constantly developing and changing with the creation of new businesses, restaurants and services, especially in downtown,” says Kelley Munch, senior communications specialist with the city of Naperville. This continuous growth can be felt while perusing the shelves at Anderson’s Bookshop, a 5th generation-run business or hosting birthday dinners at Rosie’s Taco and Tequila Bar. Meanwhile, many enjoy date nights take place at La Sorella de Francesca, an upscale white-tablecloth eatery with authentic Italian fare. The area is also home to big-name retailers like Anthropologie, Lululemon and more, as well as grocery stores like Trader Joe’s and Casey’s Foods, located in Naperville Plaza Shopping Center.
