Northwest Nashua
Suburban Neighborhood in Nashua, New Hampshire
Hillsborough County 03063
Historic and modern New England homes and condos
Northwest Nashua is popular among developers due to its large swaths of land along the border it shares with Hollis. Housing saw a boom in the 1950s and 1960s, so it is not as common to find houses from the 1800s here as it is north of Main Street. Ranch-style homes and Cape Cods from the 1960s through the 1980s may look small on the outside but often have large interior floor plans with more square footage and bedrooms to make room for families. Prices for these homes can range from $350,000 to $500,000. Larger two-story homes in Colonial Revival and split-level designs from the same era can cost upwards of $600,000 and often have more exterior space for bigger front yards and garages. Newer homes from the mid-to-late 2000s feature modern traditional styles, with two-car garages, large front porches, high ceilings and columns. These builds often cost between $450,000 and over $900,000. North of Amherst Street are several condo and townhouse communities, including Gaskell Drive Townhomes, the Villages at Kessler Farm condo complex, and Knightsbridge Arms Condominiums. Many units include one to two bedrooms, shared walls with neighbors, balconies and open-concept floorplans. Unit prices can range between $200,000 and $350,000. Townhouses south of the airport can include larger floorplans, back decks, two-story units and private garages. Communities include Hollis Crossing, Holden Farms and Coburn Woods, and units here often run from $350,000 to $550,000.Mine Falls Park and the Holman Stadium
“Nashua offers a good balance of city amenities but also outdoor experiences,” Gorhams says. “We’ve got access to parks like Greely Park, recreation organizations and then more rural spots nearby like Hollis and Silver Lake.” Holman Stadium on Amherst Street is a historic ballfield that was built in 1937. Popular among locals, it hosts the Nashua Silver Knights collegiate baseball team and has surrounding public-use ballfields for pickup baseball and softball games. Next door is the public Centennial Pool, as well as Amherst Street Elementary School which has a large playground and nearby tennis courts. Mine Falls Park has a large network of walking trails and views of the Nashua River. For indoor adventures, folks can go to Axel’s Throw House for ax throwing and drinks or to the Leda Lanes candlepin bowling alley and arcade right on Amherst Street. “You can get to the beach in 45 minutes or head to the mountains for hiking, like at Mount Monadnock,” Gorham says. “There are also smaller ski areas nearby like McIntyre in Manchester, which is good for beginners, but for serious skiing, you’d head to places like Cannon or Bretton Woods.”A variety of Nashua district public schools
There are several schools that fall within the northwest part of Nashua beyond the Everett Turnpike. Depending on their home address, students can attend kindergarten through fifth grade at one of a few elementary schools. Broad Street Elementary School is graded a C-plus on Niche, while Birch Hill Elementary and Charlotte Avenue Elementary both score a B-minus. Pennichuck Middle School is graded a C-plus and offers a variety of extracurricular sports and clubs. Nashua High School North is graded a B and offers an extensive vocational training program for students interested in various trades like nursing, HVAC and electrician work. “Nashua’s high schools are among the largest in the region compared to smaller towns," Gorham says.Inclusive community programs and organizations
Northwest Nashua benefits from many community organizations and clubs including Lions Clubs, civic clubs and local sports leagues. “Community engagement is really high here, so there are lots of opportunities for volunteering and participating in local events. There's several charities and thrift shops, and many people tend to be active in various groups,” Gorham says. Nashua also has an expansive parks and recreation program, which organizes several sports leagues for both children and adults. This gathering of friends and neighbors only cements the small-town atmosphere that the city has. “Many people do leave New Hampshire but often return after finding that other places lack the amenities and community feel of the area. Generational ties are strong, and many people end up staying close to family,” Gorham adds.Nashua public bus lines and access to the Everett Turnpike
Just down the road is U.S. Route 3, also known as the Everett Turnpike, which takes drivers 20 miles north to Manchester and to the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. For those who prefer public transportation, the Nashua Transit System has bus stops throughout the community, predominantly on Amherst Street. Drivers can also head about 50 miles south to Boston, which takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes when traffic is light.Local and chain restaurants and shops on Amherst Street
Northwest Nashua has the largest strip of restaurants, shops and other businesses in the area. Flanked on both sides by car dealerships, fast-food joints and hotels, Amherst Street is the beating heart of the neighborhood. Familiar chains like Panera Bread, Jersey Mike’s and Chick-fil-A are commonplace, but between the neon signs is an assortment of locally owned eateries. From the healthy shakes and drinks at Levitate, to the spicy flavors at K'sone's Thai Dining & Lounge, it’s not hard to find a restaurant to try every day of the week. OakCraft Pizza serves fresh pies, while Cedar’s Cafe is a Mediterranean staple. For Spanish or Dominican cuisine, Cibao has dishes like yuca fries, grilled plantains and pork belly. Pressed Cafe is a drive-thru-only option for smoothies, acai bowls and breakfast burritos. When it comes to grocery shopping, drivers can reach major stores like Whole Foods, Aldi, Hannaford and Market Basket. They can also head northwest on Amherst Street to find the closest Walmart and Lowe’s.Watching sunsets at the Nashua Airport
Northwest Nashua is also home to Nashua Airport, a small airspace hosting mostly private planes and flight training programs. A few United States presidents have come through the airport over the years, though most pilots are students in biplanes which can constantly be seen flying overhead. Locals like to park their cars at the airport’s viewing area and press their noses to the fence to watch aircraft land and take off. It is also the area’s most popular spot to get an unobstructed view of the sun setting behind the rolling New Hampshire hills.
