Southwest Nashua
Suburban Neighborhood in Nashua, New Hampshire
Hillsborough County 03062
An assortment of New England homes on Nashua's south side
There are a variety of midcentury styles in Southwest Nashua, including split and bi-levels, a few Cape Cods and classic ranch-style houses. It's common to see vinyl siding on two-story family homes with single or two-car garages, often with nice front lawns and maybe a private pool in the backyard. There are a few brick homes leftover from the 1960s and a few stone and wood homes that fit that retro, midcentury aesthetic. “Southern Nashua has a lot more 1950s to 1980s neighborhoods. There are some amazing homes down there, but they’re smaller with less land," Gorham says. “You might find a bit more affordable homes in this area, depending on the neighborhood, and you’re much closer to your neighbors." These midcentury homes may cost between $350,000 and $600,000, with a few that can run as high as $800,000 for more land and four or more bedrooms.Homes built after the 1990s follow more traditional and uniform designs. These catalogue-like houses have steep roofs, symmetrical window treatments and front porch columns. Most are found on the southern side of the neighborhood, where development has boomed in the last 20 years. These larger, updated homes can cost between $500,000 and $900,000, with a select few reaching up to - and over - that $1 million mark.
Golfers and those who appreciate the look of a manicured fairway can buy condos and villas alongside Sky Meadow Country Club. Costing between $500,000 and $900,000, the units can be either attached or detached from their neighbors. Many include private garages, with one to two floors and patios out back overlooking the golf course. Less expensive condos near the Everett Turnpike fetch between $200,000 and $375,000, and usually include two-bedroom apartment-style units in large buildings, with small patios or balconies and sometimes in-unit fireplaces.
Miles of trails, plenty of parks and Sky Meadow Country Club
Sky Meadow Country Club has an 18-hole golf course and member amenities like a swimming pool, banquet hall and bar. “Most of the country clubs in the area are frequented by not just residents but by people all over. You’ll also see a lot of weddings here, too. They’re always beautifully upkept,” Gorham says. The Lovewell Pond Yudicky Farm Conservation Area is home to 5 miles of wooded trails, and dog owners can take their four-legged friends across the street to Nashua Dog Park, where they can get some off-leash exercise in the 3-acre enclosed field. “If you look at a map of New Hampshire, we have tons of conservation loops and rail trails, which is nice because people can park anywhere and bike as much as they want to,” Gorham says. The Nashua River Rail Trail is an 11-mile paved trail popular among local bikers and runners and is also accessible to horseback riders and rollerbladers.
Summertime sports leagues can be held at KirkPatrick Park, which features baseball diamonds, a basketball court, tennis courts, a soccer field and pickleball courts. Roby Park has a large playscape with swings and a jungle gym. During the warmer months, folks can play on the park's ball diamonds. In the winter, Roby Park's sledding hill and skating rink are very popular.
Nashua Public School programs and achievements
Depending on their address, students can attend kindergarten through fifth grade at local elementary schools, such as New Searles Elementary School, which is rated an overall B on Niche, or Bicentennial Elementary School, graded a B-plus. McCarthy Middle School has undergone massive renovations in order to replace Elm Street Middle School. Its modern facilities and updated campus have made it a desirable location for study, though it is not yet rated on Niche. McCarthy Middle and Fairgrounds Middle School, which is graded a C-plus, both accommodate area sixth through eighth graders and offer dozens of extracurricular activities and clubs. Nashua High School South is graded an overall B-plus and offers its Nashua Technology Center, which has career pathway programs for automotive technology, video production and advertising, culinary arts and education.Scarecrow season and Nashua community events
Because it's nearer to the farming town of Hollis, Southwest Nashua benefits from the spooky fun of the harvest season. "It’s scarecrow season, so in Nashua and a lot of neighboring towns, you drive around, and you’ll see scarecrows all over," Gorham says. "Chester started it years and years ago. You can literally just drive around and see a bunch of displays. There are also fairs and festivals when the leaves change; it’s beautiful." In winter, folks can head up to Nashua's Main Street and join the 12 Bars of Christmas pub crawl. In the summer, Greeley Park on the city's north side hosts a summer concert series at its bandstand.Driving along Everett Turnpike or heading south to Boston
The Everett Turnpike, also known as Route 3, is Nashua's major highway. Drivers can take it 22 miles north to reach Manchester and to the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. They can also head about 43 miles south to Boston and reach the city in about an hour and a half, depending on traffic, which can get congested. Commuters who work in Boston can also drive 18 miles south to Lowell, park their cars, and hop on the MBTA Commuter Rail to reach the city. Nashua Transit System bus lines run throughout the neighborhood, particularly on Harris Road.Craft brews, vegan-friendly dishes and Pheasant Lane Mall
Though most of Southwest Nashua is very residential, there are shopping and dining options nearby. Off of Main Dunstable Road are a few hole-in-the-wall sandwich shops, like Christopher’s Subs and Pizza and T.J.’s Deli and Catering. Over on Spit Brook Road is Pressed Cafe, a vegan-friendly soup and sandwich shop. Behind it, tucked into the commercial buildings on Innovative Way, is Spyglass Brewing. This brewery has craft stouts and IPAs, as well as a few food options like French fries, nachos and burgers. When it comes to major shopping trips, folks head east to Daniel Webster Highway to access Pheasant Lane Mall, which has over 100 stores. Nearby chains like Costco, Walmart and Lowe’s round out the roster for running errands.
