South Nashville neighborhood with appealing old school look
The McMurray neighborhood also goes by Whispering Hills, which is a fitting name due to the terrain that makes up this community on the southern end of Nashville. The hilly terrain has made it easy for the houses here to have walkout or daylight basements. Many homeowners enjoy those types of basements due to how they can be turned into additional living space that can have direct outdoor access and still receive ample natural light. Another perk of the neighborhood is it hasn’t been cramped by a lot of the so-called “tall and skinnies,” the affectionate term Nashvillians give to the multi-story contemporary houses usually built in pairs on lots originally occupied by one single-family house. “Most of that area was developed in the 50s and 60s. As Nashville grew, it was one of the first suburbs of Nashville,” says Jason Crosslin, a broker with Keller Williams Realty, who’s made a few sales in McMurray. “You have a lot of midcentury modern homes that have been renovated and that kind of thing in the last two or three years.” The mid-20th century character of the neighborhood has led to some lower price points than in other more redeveloped parts of the Music City, a trait that has drawn younger and first-time home buyers. In fact, McMurray boasts some lower price points than neighbors like Crieve Hall, which is also popular for its old school look. “So homebuyers can get similar kinds of features in the house and yard, but for less money,” says Scott Troxel, a Realtor with Keller Williams Music City, who’s made several sales in both McMurray and nearby neighborhoods. “It’s a good alternative to Crieve Hall.”
Mid-20th century style builds with modern twists
Many brick ranch-style houses, bi-levels, split-levels and Colonial Revivals occupy sloping or raised lots. Some infill projects have also led to new contemporary houses. McMurray’s lots are generally deeper and wider than in other similar neighborhoods and some houses have distinct features like half-circular driveways. Emanating a bedroom community feel, neighbors are often out walking or biking on the streets. A number of the decades old houses here have also undergone renovations. Crosslin recently sold one house in the area that he says was once like a “60s time capsule.” The investors who bought the property added more detailed woodwork, installed a detached accessory dwelling unit behind the main house and altered the floor plan by taking out some of the walls to create a more open and modern interior. The investors initially bought the house for about $350,000, but ended up selling it for double the price point after the renovation. “We’re seeing a lot of that modernization coming to that area,” Crosslin says. Price points can go from just over $500,000 for a roughly 1,500-square-foot ranch style house to about $640,000 for a newer and larger contemporary style house. There are some townhouses that run between $340,000 and $410,000, depending on size and age.

With Nolensville Pike running right along McMurray’s eastern bounds, many in the neighborhood are a short drive from one of the city’s most diverse dining and shopping scenes. Nolensville is lined by a series of international grocery stores and restaurants serving a variety of cuisines that include Indian, Mexican, Honduran, Greek, Kurdish, Thai and North African. Among the options just north of McMurray is El Tapatio, a food truck that also maintains a small indoor dining space. Popular for late night meals, it serves options like authentic Mexican style sandwiches and corn tortilla tacos with jalapenos. El Tapatio is just down the road from Bangkokville, where patrons can order crisp egg rolls and curry chicken with a plate of rice shaped into a heart. A little farther north is the Plaza Mariachi, a live entertainment venue where visitors can also enjoy food and beverages. Past shows there have included performances by aerialist dancers. Grocery stores in this area include the Patel Brothers, which is known for Indian foods, and K&S World Market. The internationally-focused K&S is easy to spot by its facade, which is covered with a farm-themed mural. Walmart and Kroger are also in this area.

Learning history at the Tennessee Agricultural Museum
The Ellington Agricultural Center, Tennessee Agricultural Museum and Whitfield Park all lie right between McMurray and neighbor Crieve Hall to the west. There are remodeled log cabins complete with housewares, and the museum features wagons and farm equipment. Visitors can also see some farm animals grazing in the area. The agricultural center is home to Brentwood Hall, a more than century old Neoclassical style estate that serves as the home of the Tennessee Department of Agriculture and other other agencies. Children regularly visit Whitfield Park to burn off energy on the playground. Park goers can easily access a trail that runs along the Sevenmile Creek. More recreational fun exists along Nolensville Pike. Friends and siblings can play rounds of bowling at Tusculum Strike & Spare, while avid rock climbers can keep in practice at The Crag Nashville.
