The Nations is an urban neighborhood with many murals adorning its buildings.
A revamped industrial community of west Nashville
The structure towering over the railroad tracks just below the bend of the Cumberland River serves as one of The Nations’ most defining symbols. The front of this 200-foot-tall former grain silo is emblazoned with a mural of an elderly man: Lee Estes, who at the time this project was completed had lived in The Nations for nearly a century. On the other side of the building, or standing behind Estes, is a painting of two young boys from the neighborhood institution St. Luke’s Community House. One interpretation of the mural is that it represents both this neighborhood’s past and present. “It was previously a combined industrial area with housing for local workers, that has been totally revamped with a lot of new buildings,” says Andrea Franden, a Realtor with Parks Realty, who’s made one sale in the area. “And it has attracted a lot of members in the community, as well as employees and doctors who work in the health care industry at places like Vanderbilt, Centennial or St. Thomas. There’s a wide range of age groups, but with a sort of youthful energy running through it, which has attracted all sorts of interesting eateries and brewpubs to the area.” The old silo itself is the artistic anchor of a larger development that includes apartment and condo complexes. And while the train tracks and industrial facilities near the shores of the Cumberland keep the older character alive, they've been joined by a lineup of establishments on Centennial Boulevard that range from trendy eateries to modern gyms and fitness studios.
Southern Grist Brewery is located in The Nations Neighborhood.
Gourmet burgers with beer, whiskey tastings along Centennial and 44th
An eclectic mix of establishments, like Bobbie’s Dairy Dip–a classic burger and ice cream stand, operate out of factory-style vintage spaces along both Charlotte Avenue and Centennial Boulevard. Vinyl, games, and comic book collectors can head to the strip mall across the street to peruse The Great Escape’s collections. While another dense lineup of options exists on the opposite end of The Nations near the old silo. For those looking to grab a coffee or a Southern-style breakfast, there's the Frothy Monkey, or for heartier fare, Bringle's Smoking Oasis, is the go-to spot for barbecue. Settle in at one of the outdoor picnic tables and chow down. Bringle's outdoor bar also features large, mounted TV screens and a lively ambiance for watching the latest sports games. Just across the road, there's also the Burger + Grain, which serves gourmet burgers with wagyu beef. Craft beer enthusiasts can walk a block to Southern Grist Brewing Company, to sample one of their many pours. The establishment is hard to miss as its tap room sits right in front of a nearly 10,000-square-foot production space complete with a prominent black and white mural of the state of Tennessee with a green hop at its center. More tastings can be had on the eastern end of the neighborhood, at both the Fat Bottom Brewing Company and the Pennington Distilling Co. For groceries, a Kroger just south of the neighborhood offers fresh produce options.
Multi-Story contemporary homes are becoming popular in The Nations.
Modern condos, townhouses and ‘tall and skinnies’
Although classic single-family homes with ranch-style, bungalow and minimal Traditional traits still exist in some pockets, The Nations has been increasingly populated by modern, flat-roofed condo buildings with touches like mixed brick exteriors and prominent windows. As is common in several other parts of Nashville, these new condos share the streets with what Nashvillians call “tall and skinnies.” Aka narrow, multi-story homes often packed into small lots originally intended for one single-family home. Many "tall and skinnies" were built within the past few years and feature modern fixtures like hardwood floors and elegant electric fireplaces. Price points in The Nations vary from the mid $300,000s for a one-bedroom condo to upwards of $700,000 to $1 million for a brand new three-storied modern build. Price points for Traditional style townhouses or attached homes can go from about $470,000 for a two-bedroom to $750,000 for a four-bedroom.

CrossFit sessions on Centennial and nature walks at England Park
The warehouse spaces along Centennial are also home to a number of gyms and fitness studios. Among them is F45 Training Nashville Nations, which neighbors the upcoming home of a Carbon Performance gym. Members of F45 can try out CrossFit training and other types of high-impact workouts, while those at Poe’s Gym (a bit further up the road) can hit a variety of weights in a modest setting. The tree-dense England Park is popular with those looking for peaceful strolls or jogs. The park also has a playground for children and a variety of natural trails for those who prefer hiking. Nearby Richland Creek, part of which is marshland, is also accessible via these footpaths. Softball players frequent West Park to the north, which also features attractions like a log and boulder installation and a circular wet weather storage tank that’s been painted to portray a group of trees under a blue partly cloudy sky.
The annual Light the Nations festival takes place on 51st Ave N.
Don’t miss the neighborhood's Light the Nations festival
The heart of the neighborhood comes to life in October, as many flock to 51st Avenue to enjoy the annual Light the Nations festival. Festival-goers can pick up quick eats from assorted food vendors, admire some art, enjoy live music and watch performances like tap dancing routines. Children can even compete against each other in games like outdoor jenga.
