A Southeast Texas city with history and amenities galore
In 1897, Nederland was founded by a group of Dutch settlers who felt the low-lying land of southeast Texas reminded them of their home. In recognition, they named it after their European country. To this day, residents decide to make Nederland their home for the variety of home types, highly rated schools and proximity to an array of amenities.
Nederland has been compared to other Golden Triangle cities in Southeast Texas, including Beaumont, Orange and Port Arthur. In terms of jobs, cost of living and home prices, the cities are similar. “What specifically draws homebuyers to Nederland are the endless employment opportunities, the remarkable education system, and tons of entertainment options,” says Koby Jones, a Realtor at Advantage Real Estate , who has sold homes in Nederland.
From 1970 ranches to contemporary homes built in the 2010s
Homes in Nederland come in a variety of styles and price points and typically feature small front yards and fenced-in backyards with space for a pool. Traditional ranch homes from the 1970s sell from $150,000 to $250,000. Newer contemporary one-story homes built in the 2010s with brick facades sell between $240,000 and $340,000. Two-story newer contemporary homes built in the 2010s with brick facades have sold between $380,000 and $515,000. The median home price in Nederland is about $205,000.
Getting around on foot in the developments in Nederland can come as a challenge as most of them do not include sidewalks. Most houses do include a garage. As for the roads, most developments have wide roads, allowing for cars to pass in either direction.

Kids enjoy the pony rides, petting zoo and arts and crafts at the Christmas celebration.
High marks for Nederland’s public-school pipeline
Nederland has an impressive pipeline of public schools. Langham Elementary School, Wilson Middle School and Nederland High School each earned an A-minus or better grade from Niche. Nederland High School is highlighted by its 95% graduation rate and impressive athletics department. “It’s a great place to raise a family and call home,” says Jones.

Explore the history of Nederland
To this day, Nederland residents are extremely proud of their roots. The laborers who settled here erected a 40-foot Dutch Windmill. In 1969, the structure was converted into a museum where visitors can see artifacts like wooden clogs and a trunk that traveled from Europe to the small Texas city.
Just next door is a space dedicated to French settlers who arrived in Nederland from South Louisiana. La Maison Acadienne, which means House of Acadia, was designed to look like an authentic Acadian home.
Sometimes residents don’t want a history lesson in their free time but prefer to go jogging or to feed the ducks. There are six city parks in Nederland. Locals like to head over to Rienstra Heritage Park for a stroll on the walking trail and to take a gander at the nature observation areas. For those looking to play some pickup soccer, they land at Doornbos Heritage Park.
