The local lore is that Nedrow comes from humble beginnings. In the early 1900s, residents here wanted to name the hamlet after prominent landowner Cassius Worden. He agreed to the honor on the condition that his surname be reversed. Narrow pine or maple tree-lined streets wind throughout the community, which has a peaceful, rural vibe.
Mix of styles and budget-friendly
Nedrow comprises Dutch colonials, ranch-style homes, farmhouses and wooden clapboard bungalows primarily built in the 1920s through the 1940s. Most homes have either attached or detached garages and rest on lots of around 1/8 acre, suitable for a gathering area. “The homes aren’t fancy, but they have good bones,” says Katie MacDonald, a licensed real estate salesperson with Oak Tree Real Estate, who grew up and lives here. Nedrow offers some of the most budget-friendly housing in New York State, and prices range from $48,000 to $182,000. “You can still get a great house in Nedrow for $100,000, and that’s tough to do anymore,” MacDonald says. “Things sell within two days with multiple offers. We don’t have enough housing here. Things started changing during COVID-19. People flooded to our area from New York City and Chicago because they found they could live here affordably with some land.”

Onondaga Senior High School covers seventh through 12th grades and offers advanced placement courses. The school has a B overall Niche grade. “It’s a smaller, more intimate school district than some of the others in the area,” MacDonald says. “The class sizes are much smaller.”

Fishermen, birdwatchers' haven
The 95-acre Rand Tract Park features wooded trails that lead to Webster Pond, a small sanctuary where locals can purchase corn and feed hundreds of ducks and geese. Clark Reservation State Park is a geologic wonder of the last ice age, featuring rugged cliffs and rocky outcrops, woodland and meadows, and a glacial plunge basin lake in which the surface and bottom waters do not mix. Here, fishermen can catch bullheads, sunfish and pickerel, while birdwatchers can observe kingfishers, woodpeckers, and cedar waxwings. The Nature Center is open from mid-May through Labor Day. Guided nature walks that leave from the center are offered on weekends. Apple picking is a popular activity in the fall. “Nedrow is very close to apple country. There are lots of apple orchards within five minutes,” MacDonald says. “It’s a fun thing to do. It’s something I grew up with, and It’s absolutely glorious in the fall when the leaves change.”

Frozen treats are a staple here
Residents can get their groceries from Aldi or Green Hills Farms, a mom-and-pop establishment that sells fresh produce, meats, prepared meals, baked goods and more. Sweet Grass Diner is a local favorite for “home-cooked meals” and regional dishes such as poutine. Bailey’s Dairy Treat ice cream shop has been a community mainstay since 1958. “I used to go to Bailey’s for ice cream after soccer games,” MacDonald says.
