Residents and businesses are giving Five Points an identity of its own

Located between the New Bern Historic District and the suburb of Ghent, Five Points has traditionally been more of a crossroads than a place where buyers seek to drop roots. In fact, the neighborhood even gets its name from the five-way intersection where Broad Street, Queen Street and Roundtree Street meet. But low property values are attracting investors and local businesses, which are starting to transform Five Points into a community of its own. “The locals call Five Points the Beermuda Triangle, because of the breweries there,” says Drake Bratton, a broker with Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Advantage and a 40-year resident of New Bern. “It’s really pulling people in from the New Bern Historic District and Ghent, because it’s the middle ground between the two and has a high entertainment factor, though there aren’t too many homes there.” Five Points also puts residents close to the Trent River and its associated attractions, such as the New Bern Grand Marina and Lawson Creek Park, which offers boat launches and a fishing pier. Because of this, the neighborhood has attracted a diverse crowd. “The triangle is definitely hip, and a lot of seniors love and frequent it, too,” says Gregory Rusch, a broker with North Group who has been selling homes in New Bern for 5 years. “They’re fit and youthful and play pickleball and some live on boats. Five Points, and New Bern, is a good mix of all kinds of people, and everyone seems very welcome anywhere.”

A Beermuda Triangle of craft brews, plus restaurants and shops downtown

Five Points is the location of the creatively named Beermuda Triangle, which has traditionally comprised a brewery called Brewery 99 and two bars – Freshwater Beer Co. and the recently closed Tap That New Bern. The remaining establishments aren’t just known for their craft brews, they also host various events, such as Brewery 99’s weekly farmers market, and have become beloved community meeting spots. “There’s a running group that runs out of Freshwater, and sometimes they sponsor events,” Bratton says. “Brewery 99 has a bakery, so they offer breakfasts. Food trucks will also show up to support the breweries.” Only a few blocks east, the New Bern Historic District is packed with locally owned businesses and restaurants. The Chelsea serves up New American cuisine, while Mitchell Hardware is a modern-day general store. Supermarkets such as Harris Teeter and big-box stores such as Walmart and HomeGoods can be found to the west of Five Points, up Neuse Boulevard and down Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

A diverse selection of homes, with more developments coming

Broad Street splits Five Points in half, though home styles tend to be the same on either side. Some homes on the south end of the neighborhood have private docks on the Trent River, but they’re also at a higher flood risk. Five Points is architecturally diverse, with American Foursquares, Tudor Revival cottages, workman’s cottages and other midcentury builds. Some residents prefer their privacy, placing fences along their property. Houses don’t sell often here, but most will go for between $60,000 and $200,000. Aside from detached homes, several apartment complexes can also be found in Five Points, with even more housing options on the way. “There are plans to build a four-story mixed-use development, King’s Domain, at the corner of Pollock and Princess,” Bratton says. “You could own a small business and live right above it. As of July 2024, it’s set to be completed within a year.”

Recreation and education near Five Points

Lawson Creek Park is on the other side of the Trent River from Five Points, sporting a picnic pavilion, two boat launches and a recently constructed boardwalk. The Twin Rivers YMCA in neighboring Ghent has a gym, a sauna, pickleball courts and an indoor and outdoor pool, as well as swim lessons and fitness classes. Over in the New Bern Historic District, Tryon Palace is a reconstruction of the Colonial governor’s mansion. The building is open for tours, and visitors are also invited to stroll the meticulously cared-for gardens. The North Carolina History Center at Tryon Palace is right next door, offering a museum with rotating exhibits and event halls for lectures, concerts and special presentations. Other green spaces include Kafer Park, home to one of New Bern’s oldest baseball diamonds, and Fort Totten Park, which offers a recently remodeled playground, picnic tables and another baseball field.

MumFest and other events

The Beermuda Triangle Block Party is Five Points’ main festivity, which in the past has featured live music and aerial circus, but a boatload of craft beers to try can be expected any year. Other New Bern events include MumFest, where downtown streets are closed off for a weekend each October to make way for vendors, performances and amusement park rides, and Cars and Coffee New Bern, a monthly auto show for lovers of caffeine and vintage cars alike.

Naval JROTC at New Bern High

Brinson Memorial Elementary is located in neighboring James City and gets an overall B from Niche, with an A for diversity. Grover C. Fields Middle earns an overall B-plus, and New Bern High receives a B-minus. Special academic programs offered by the high school include Advancement via Individual Determination, or AVID, and Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps, or NJROTC. AVID aims to provide students, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds, the skills and support to succeed in college and the career world. In NJROTC, students take courses such as oceanography and meteorology, participate in military drills and fitness training, and visit military bases. Craven Community College is about 3.5 miles west of Five Points.

Close to U.S. Highway 70 and an airport

Sidewalks and bike lanes allow for car-free travel to the New Bern Historic District, only about a mile east of many homes. Entrance ramps to U.S. Highway 70 are less than a mile from most Five Points homes. Thanks to this highway, the Coastal Carolina Regional Airport is only a 4-mile drive south. The small commercial airport offers direct flights to Charlotte, North Carolina; Hartford, Connecticut; and Orlando, Florida. Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, a Marine Corps airfield, is 17 miles farther down U.S. 70. CarolinaEast Medical Center is only about a mile northwest of Five Points.
