New Castle is home to hoops heads and more

New Castle is a Hoosier State locale with uniquely deep basketball roots. This is apparent from the moment people set foot in the heart of this community of about 17,400. Banners proclaiming “Basketball Lives Here” hang on lightposts along the area’s Broad Street thoroughfare. The 8,424-seat New Castle Fieldhouse by New Castle High is known as one of the largest high school gymnasiums on the globe, and the 21,000-square-foot Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in town memorializes Indiana’s most beloved sport. From the hoops in driveways around town to the communal experience of attending games at the New Castle gym, basketball is a constant drumbeat in this close-knit area. “My favorite thing about New Castle is the people, and the small-town vibe it has,” says Realtor Melissa Guffy, who’s with Re/Max First Integrity and grew up in the region. “The people are caring, kind and friendly — some of the best, big-hearted people around, which makes our community thrive due to the strong support it provides.”

Well-established houses come in a variety of shapes and sizes

Many of New Castle’s existing homes date to the years between 1900 and 1965, painting the community’s sidewalk-lined blocks with an array of classic bungalows, Foursquares and ranch-style houses. Lots often stretch from one-tenth to one-fifth of an acre, enough for front- and backyard space plus off-street parking in some cases. Traditional single-family properties needing work can go for $10,000 to $60,000, while turnkey homes typically range from $70,000 to $420,000. Manufactured houses sell for $40,000 to $220,000, based on condition.

Downtown New Castle offers dining, shopping and entertainment

New Castle has a hearty variety of restaurants, many of them located downtown, either on or just off Broad Street. “The options for dining out have increased over the last couple of years and are continuing to grow,” Guffy says. Ink & Ale Brewhouse is one of the relatively new options in this area, open since 2024. The restaurant doubles as a spot for entertainment, with a golf simulator and axe-throwing area inside. Ky's American Bistro also opened in 2024 and has a popular salad bar. Primo across the street has established itself as a staple for Italian food since its opening in 2015. Broad Street’s Harvest Market, part of a family-owned Indiana chain, is an option for groceries. Other downtown businesses include Maxwell's Mercantile, which carries women’s clothing and home decor. Audiophiles can peruse the records at Monkey Jack's Emporium. The Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, near the New Castle Fieldhouse, has stained glass displays honoring Hall of Fame members and showcases artifacts ranging from jerseys to trophies.

Community events celebrate warm weather and the holidays

Traditions in New Castle include the Broad Street Cruise-Ins, a series of car and motorcycle meet-ups on the first Saturday of the month from April to October. The cruise-ins feature food trucks and live music. December brings the Christmas Walk, when downtown is decked out in holiday lights, vendors and bounce houses. Carriage rides and free hot chocolate are also available. Downtown is also home to the Henry County Farmers Market, where locals can find produce and other items on Saturday mornings from April through October.

Area schools integrate STEM learning from the start

The New Castle Community Schools system maintains a B rating from Niche. Elementary assignments vary, but students may start at the B-rated Riley Elementary, where special activities include family STEM nights. Students at the C-plus-rated New Castle Middle can take part in STEM-based programming like a Design It Make It Challenge, using skills like coding to solve problems. New Castle High gets a B-minus and has a career pathway program with instruction in computer science, business, agriculture and more. The boys basketball team that calls New Castle Fieldhouse home has two state titles to its name, in 1932 and 2006.

From pool time to golf, outdoor amenities vary

New Castle has outdoor activities for all seasons. Arts Park features lush trees and other greenery and is home to a replica LOVE sculpture, of Philadelphia fame. Its pavilion can be rented for events. Baker Park encompasses The Rock and The Pebble, a pair of disc golf courses totaling 27 holes. Baker also has an aquatic center with a pool and multiple slides. Westwood Golf Club and Memorial Park Golf Course combine for 36 holes, all open to the public. Memorial Park also has ponds for fishing and is known as a sledding spot when it snows.

The state capital is relatively close

Interstate 70 is just about 6 miles south of downtown New Castle. The highway provides a direct route into Indianapolis, the state capital, about 50 miles west. Indianapolis International Airport, 60 miles away, has nonstop flights to over 40 places. Locals can stay within New Castle for care at the Henry Community Health hospital, which is located on the north side of town and has an emergency department.
