Westwood affords rural living infused with outdoor recreation
In Westwood, quiet country roads lead to a sprawling destination for outdoor activities. Westwood Park is the centerpiece, an 800-acre expanse with a lake where people come to launch a boat, fish, hike and camp. The Westwood Golf Club is close by for golfers, and neighborhood homes sit on at least a half-acre of land. For many families, one well-regarded school is a particular draw. “Westwood has one of the local elemetaries that’s a really popular school,” says Beth Carr, a local Realtor with Re/Max First Integrity, who has almost 30 years of real estate experience. “People will move to that district to ensure they’re in that school.”
Midcentury homes line quiet roads with varied lot sizes
Many of the houses in this area date to the mid-20th century, and they’re a mix of bungalows, colonials and ranch-style options. “I think there’s a certain segment of the market that likes a smaller, one-story home,” Carr says. “And there are several of those in that neighborhood.” Homes are spaced along the area’s lengthy, single-lane roads. Listings in Westwood sell for $140,000 to $260,000 in most cases, but properties with double-digit acreage can go for up to $680,000. “Those nicer ones that are priced appropriately hit the market and then will go [quickly], and perhaps even with multiple offers,” Carr says. Westwood carries a CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.
Westwood Park attracts outdoor enthusiasts
Westwood Park, located just off the Big Blue River, dates to 1974. Carr says it’s well-kept. The park's lake, formed from an earthen dam, teems with bass, crappie and catfish. Anglers can fish from the shore or a boat, canoe or kayak here. There's a 10-mile loop trail for hikers and mountain bikers and a 6-mile horse trail. The park’s campground has 38 sites.
The Wilbur Wright Fish & Wildlife Area, 6 miles northwest of the neighborhood, stretches 1,000 acres and is open to hunting and fishing in the Big Blue and Little Blue rivers. The space also features a 1-mile hiking trail and a shooting range. Golfers in the area have the Westwood Golf Club, whose 18-hole course is open to the public.
Area schools highlight achievements, offer extracurricular activities
The New Castle Community School system is rated B by Niche. The B-rated Westwood Elementary recognizes students who show strong character and leadership through its Students of the Month awards. New Castle Middle carries a C-plus grade and offers robotics, comic book and photography clubs. The B-minus-rated New Castle High includes the Pathways to Your Future program with instruction in topics ranging from agriculture and business to computer science.
Memorial Drive is stacked with restaurants and other businesses
The Westwood area is just west of Memorial Drive, a thoroughfare lined with big-box stores and restaurants. This stretch gives residents relatively close access to places like Kroger, Aldi, Bealls, Hibbett Sports and Tractor Supply Co. Restaurant options include chains from Applebee’s to Buffalo Wild Wings. Stacks Pancake House Restaurant is a family-owned spot on Memorial Drive, popular not just for the pancakes but also for the omelets. Cafe Royal is a draw for lunch, with a menu full of wraps and sandwiches.
Interstate 70 connects this area to jobs and travel hubs
Westwood residents are about 5 miles from Interstate 70, which provides a straight shot 50 miles west into downtown Indianapolis. Carr says many people commute to Indianapolis from New Castle. “We’ve had some influx of people that are moving out of Indy to be in a little quieter area,” Carr says. The Indianapolis International Airport is roughly 60 miles away on the city's west side and has direct flights to over 50 destinations. New Castle’s Henry Community Health hospital is 4 miles east of Westwood and features a 24/7 emergency room.
New Castle hosts multiple annual festivals
Annual traditions in the city include the New Castle-Henry County Renaissance Festival in July. Held at Arts Park downtown, the event is a throwback to medieval times, with live entertainment, food and vendors carrying a variety of products. The Farmer’s Pike Festival is a staple of Labor Day weekend on New Castle’s eastern outskirts. The festival lasts four days and includes hundreds of booths with antiques, art, clothes and other items.
