New Hanover is a historic community in New Jersey

Situated on the fringes of the Pine Barrens in New Jersey, New Hanover is a township that dates to the days of King George II, who drew its boundaries to set it apart from neighboring communities. Farming took hold as the area’s primary trade, which has continued into the present day and is reflected in a five-day celebration that attracts thousands of attendees.

More than 350 years after its founding, New Hanover is also home to the U.S. Army’s Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. “It’s a rural area,” says AnnaMarie Comforte, a broker associate with Keller Williams Premier. “New Hanover draws a lot of people for McGuire Air Force Base and Fort Dix, so you’re going to have a lot of people that live right off the base. It’s very spread-out, because you’ve got farms, and it’s quiet, besides hearing the planes that come in the closer you are to the base.” The rural surroundings allow for sizable lots, and locals are within driving distance of both Philadelphia and Trenton.

Homes near McGuire Air Force Base and Fort Dix

Most homes in New Hanover are concentrated in its northeastern corner, and many properties have ranch-style or colonial-style architecture. “New Hanover has relatively larger homes,” Comforte says. “You do have some smaller ones in the mix, but there are colonial-style homes and lots of developments.” Lot sizes can vary, from 1-2 acres to over half a dozen acres. That variation also means there is a wide range of prices; most recently-sold homes have cost between $370,000 and around $500,000. Residents should be aware that aircraft flyovers and military exercises, among other aspects of the air force base, can cause noise in the surrounding area.
