1930s Tudor revivals and Carriage Hill condos
Beaver Hills, as its name suggests, is a very hilly neighborhood, with occasional staircases leading up to front doors from the sidewalk. Roads twist and turn a little here, but tall trees cast shade as residents drive around town. Tudor revivals from the 1930s have sloping roofs, natural stonework and large chimneys, while Colonial Revivals and Cape Cods showcase classic dormer windows and gambrel roofs. Most homes in the area cost between $250,000 and $500,000 and include three to five bedrooms and architecture that dates back to the early 20th century. Condos in the Carriage Hill Condo Community have been known to vary in price from $125,000 to $200,000. Condos often have one to two bedrooms, large living rooms and sometimes an upstairs.Dog parks, rivers and West Rock Ridge State Park
Edgewood Park, on the southwest side of the neighborhood, has several walking trails for those warmer days, as well as a dog park, skate park, playground and athletic courts. Walkers stroll alongside the river or ponds beneath a canopy of trees during warm Connecticut days. Hikers head north to West Rock Ridge State Park to stand atop the tall, cragged ridge and overlook New Haven Harbor. Twenty-one miles of trails cut through West Rock Ridge, which also has opportunities for fishing, horseback riding and rock climbing. For students looking to live here, there are several quads and campus greens to explore at both Yale and Southern Connecticut State University.New Haven School District achievements
Students in Beaver Hills attend schools within the New Haven School District which earns an overall C grade from Niche. Students may attend L.W. Beecher Museum Magnet School of Arts and Sciences, which teaches kindergarten through eighth grade. L.W. Beecher has formed partnerships with local New Haven museums, which they use to help educate students about arts, sciences and history. James Hillhouse High School, which is graded a C-minus, offers its Health Careers Academy Pathway (H-CAP), allowing students an opportunity to earn college credits in healthcare studies with Gateway Community College. The Beaver Hills annual Summer Block Party
Beaver Hills has a lively suburban community, lending a family atmosphere to an otherwise college-student-heavy part of town. “Everyone is friendly and looks out for one another,” Katz says. “Once a year, we hold a community block party so we can get to know new folks.” The annual Beaver Hills Summer Block Party takes place on local roads like Ella T Grasso Boulevard and Osborn Avenue, where neighbors participate in games and share and eat homemade food. New residents can make friends, while long-time neighbors can catch up and spend a day outside.Train rides to Boston and New York City via Union Square
Beaver Hills is just 2 miles from the center of New Haven and Yale University, so residents have convenient access to all the restaurants and campus events that the area has to offer. The closest train station, Union Square, is only a 10-minute drive away for commuters or those getting away for the weekend. Because Beaver Hills is situated between Boston and New York City, it’s convenient to commute in either direction. Southeast of town is the Tweed New Haven Airport, about 6 miles away, and the Saint Raphael Campus of the Yale New Haven Hospital is less than 2 miles away.Whalley Avenue shops and restaurants
Edge of the Woods is a natural, vegetarian market on Whalley Avenue that sells groceries, prepared foods and baked goods. This family-owned business also features the largest vegan bakery in Connecticut and is a proud community partner. “The greater New Haven area is also well known for its pizza shops, and some of those places always have lines out the door,” Katz says. Rawa is a Mediterranean and Middle Eastern fusion restaurant, which has pizza as well as baklava and baba ghanouj. Ladle & Loaf is New Haven’s only Glatt Kosher restaurant, serving burgers, specialty sandwiches and soups. Fin and Scale is a popular sushi spot, and D'Amato's Seafood, a neighborhood favorite since 1933, serves the classic D’Amato roll, a fried fillet with the works. The local Walgreens has everyday essentials for quick errands, and there are several corner markets like Shang Hai Fish Market and Edge of the Woods Market along Whalley Avenue. For longer grocery trips, there is a Stop & Shop a little farther down the road.
