Events celebrating community
The Freddy Fixer Parade, which dates back to 1962, is the area’s flagship event. It’s one of the oldest Black American parades in the northeast and began as an initiative for residents to show pride for their community. Every year, the parade marches down Dixwell Avenue and is fueled by local organizations and residents.Parks a short distance away
Scantlebury Park is a popular green space in the neighborhood that features an expansive play area, basketball courts and a skatepark that opened in 2020. Locals can also head over to play basketball on the colorful courts at Goffe Street Park, which were recently renovated. The renovation included a mural that honors John Williamson, nicknamed “Super John,” a New Haven resident who played in the ABA and NBA for eight seasons, from 1973 to 1981. Residents can also hit the Farmington Canal Heritage Greenway for a walk, jog or bike ride. The Dixwell Community House is a place where locals can get active, too, with an open fitness room, plus guided fitness and dance classes.Multifamily homes in Dixwell
