New Holstein offers staples found across Calumet County
New Holstein has a lot in common with other Calumet County cities. Its name comes from the Holstein duchy in Germany, where many German immigrants came from when they settled in the region, and Wisconsin Route 32 goes through the city, lined with local shops and supper clubs. “Calumet County is known as the Supper Club Capital of the Midwest,” says Rick Sense, tourism specialist with Travel Calumet. While other cities in the county have similar supper clubs and festivals, New Holstein stands out thanks to its winery, garden center and airport, all of which draw in visitors from nearby towns and cities. New Holstein receives a CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, which is lower than the national average of 4.
Altona Supper Club and the Wolf and Fox Winery in New Holstein
While Calumet County is famous for its supper clubs, New Holstein’s are slightly different. Big windows let in plenty of natural light at Altona Supper Club, where visitors enjoy American fare. However, this supper club is one of the few open for lunch and not just dinner. Korner Kitchen is another popular American joint that is also open for breakfast. While a little outside the city, the Wolf and Fox Winery at Woelfel Homestead is a go-to for good wine and a popular wedding venue. “It’s a sixth-generation homestead,” Sense says. “The guy who owns the winery was in the wine business in California and moved back to the family farm to open the winery.” Those with green thumbs can stop in Honeymoon Acres for plants and garden supplies. “People come from all over the state to shop there. It’s a mammoth collection,” Sense says. For groceries, Piggly Wiggly is in the city, and Walmart Supercenter is about 7 miles away in Chilton.
Bungalow and ranch-style homes found across the city
New Holstein is full of bungalows and ranch-style homes, typically ranging from $150,000 to $380,000. Older neighborhoods have narrow alleyways behind homes or driveways with detached garages, while more recent communities have wider driveways with attached two-car garages. Sidewalks stretch along both sides of the street, and front yards often feature trees and flower gardens.
B-rated public schools with an attached public fitness center
New Holstein Elementary School receives a B-minus from Niche. New Holstein Middle School and New Holstein High School share a building and a B rating. The New Holstein Fitness Center is also part of the campus. The gyms are open throughout the day to residents with memberships.
Kiwanis Park has athletic fields and peaceful trails
Kiwanis Park offers a mix of spaces for different experiences. The disc golf course and soccer fields support athletes. Frisbee rentals for the disc golf course are available at City Hall or the aquatic center, which is right next to the park. Multiuse paths go through woods and prairies. The veteran’s memorial honors city residents who served in the military. The park is also the site of the community center, which often hosts meetings for local organizations, Boy Scout troops and other clubs. Lake Winnebago and nature preserves like the Killsnake State Wildlife Area are within 10 miles of town.
Firefighter fundraisers and Christmas lights in the park
Every July, the city comes together for the Firefighter’s Parade. It includes a themed parade, live music and a fireworks display. It’s also a fundraiser for the firefighters’ department, helping finance new equipment for the squad. In December, Country Christmas Weekend starts with a parade that leads to Kiwanis Park. Once there, Santa lights up the Christmas lights in the park. Other festivities include hot chocolate, live music and carriage rides.
New Holstein's airport and driving to the rest of Calumet County
This is a more car-dependent community, and Wisconsin Route 32 goes right through the town. Route 32 leads to Chilton, about 7 miles north, and Appleton, about 34 miles north. Ascension Calumet Hospital is 7 miles away in Chilton. New Holstein Municipal Airport is a private airport that gets some traffic throughout the year. “There’s a big annual fly-in in Oshkosh, and a lot of people fly into the New Holstein airport, and they can camp there overnight,” Sense says. For commercial flights, Appleton International Airport is 40 miles from New Holstein.
