Civic Center is a residential suburb with a farming past

Now a mixed-use suburb of Minneapolis, New Hope was originally settled as a part of Crystal, a neighboring farming community. However, when Crystal incorporated in 1936, many farmers broke away — unhappy about paying taxes for things like streetlights and sewer projects — and decided to call their new town: New Hope. Just 15 years later, New Hope also officially incorporated and transitioned from a farming community into a bustling city, with its population multiplying 40-fold in less than 20 years. Nowadays, the population of this once rapidly growing city has held steady, and decades later has evolved once again – this time becoming a quiet suburb of Minneapolis. Today, Civic Center is the neighborhood at the heart of New Hope, made up of modest houses on tree-lined streets, multiple parks, a diverse school district and convenient shopping and dining. "Walkability is a major draw for people living in the Civic Center neighborhood," says Realtor Joe Carmack of Carmack Real Estate Group. "You've got many restaurants, coffee shops and stores within just a few blocks."

Ranch-style and split-level homes in Civic Center

Civic Center’s housing consists primarily of single-family homes, although there is a cluster of apartment complexes in the southeast quarter of the neighborhood. Houses tend to be away from main thoroughfares, which reduces traffic and noise. Houses here feature ranch-style and split-level designs, and most were built between 1950 and 1980. Residential streets feature leafy canopies of mature trees, and the median lot size is nearly a quarter acre – meaning there’s room for a deck or patio and to play fetch with a dog. Homes generally cost between $286,000 and $438,000, with many selling in the low- to mid-$300,000s. Carmack says homes in New Hope are more affordable than many other Twin Cities suburbs. "The affordable price tag of homes for sale has kept demand high, and the low turnover of residents that love living here can make it difficult to find a home to purchase in these neighborhoods," he says.

STEM, arts and Spanish-focused options for schools

Civic Center is part of the Robbinsdale Area School system. The district earns an overall B-minus grade from Niche and an A-plus for diversity. Many kids in Civic Center attend Forest Elementary School, graded C-plus, before moving on to Robbinsdale Middle School, which has a C. For high school, students can attend the C-plus-rated Cooper High. Other schooling options include the district's three elementary magnet programs: the School of Engineering and Arts, the Spanish Immersion School and the FAIR School Pilgrim Lane, an integrated arts program. FAIR School Crystal is another magnet program for kids in grades six through eight that incorporates the arts into STEM classes. Escuela Exitos Charter School, provides dual English/Spanish education for students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

A car-dependent neighborhood with an express bus to downtown Minneapolis

Civic Center is a primarily car-dependent neighborhood, but some local Metro Transit routes serve the greater New Hope area, such as the express bus service to and from downtown Minneapolis. The nearest airport is the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, about 22 miles away. The closest hospital, North Memorial Health – Robbinsdale Hospital, is about 5 miles away.

Civic Center parks feature sports fields, a water park and an amphitheater

Civic Center has three parks. The biggest is its namesake, Civic Center Park, which Carmack says is the neighborhood's biggest draw. It has the usual park amenities like a playground, tennis courts and basketball courts, plus a concession stand, a small amphitheater for local theater performances, a sand volleyball court and an expansive aquatic center with multiple pools and water slides. New Hope’s City Hall is also located in the park. Corner Park and Holiday Park are two small pocket parks nestled within the neighborhood. Corner has a recently renovated playground and a basketball court, while Holiday has a playground and a baseball diamond.

There are also vegan and vegetarian options, a happy hour most days and brunch on weekends. Jet’s Pizza is a chain with Detroit-style, New York-style, thin-crust and gluten-free pizzas.
