A midcentury neighborhood within commuting distance of Minneapolis
In the early 20th century, years before the invention of four-wheel drive, New Hope, Minnesota, was primarily farmland. Incorporated as a city in the mid-1930s, housing developments soon followed. "Some farmers wanted new amenities, some were content with the ways things were going," says the city's communications coordinator, Beth Kramer. "Ultimately, it was necessary to have new infrastructure." Holiday Park, a quiet neighborhood sandwiched between New Hope's city center and Highway 169, welcomed dozens of families during the suburban boom of the 1960s and '70s, and Kramer says it's still a popular area today. A winding network of midcentury homes surrounds the neighborhood's namesake park, and residents live within walking distance of schools, grocery stores and churches. It's the type of place where people tend to stick around for decades. "Maybe the parents settled, and now the children are living here," explains Kramer. "People will go through high school, move away, then come back to raise their families."

Mature trees shade quarter-acre lots, shedding their colorful leaves in the fall. Sale prices typically range between $300,000 and $500,000. The neighborhood's CAP Index Crime Score is a 3 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.

A namesake park, summertime events and an aquatic center
The neighborhood is anchored by its namesake park, where families will find a small playground and open field space. Kramer speaks to the city's "robust" parks system, noting, "One of the great things about it is that almost every residential home is within a quarter mile of a community park." There are more amenities at Civic Center Park, which is only a few blocks away. Civic Center's recently renovated facilities include an aquatic park with a vortex pool, paved walking trails and a skate park. The New Hope Performance Center hosts summer theater camps, live music and family movie nights throughout the summer season, and nighttime temperatures can drop down into the 50s and 60s, so attendees pack blankets and sweatshirts. Minnesotans are also known for taking full advantage of winter weather. Here, it's common to see several inches of snow on the ground or to experience sub-zero temperatures. The city is also home to three outdoor skating rinks with warming houses and an indoor ice arena for when it gets "too cold to skate outdoors," according to Kramer. The New Hope Citizen Advisory Commission also hosts a snowman-building contest every year.

Holiday Park residents can choose between shopping in the neighboring community of Plymouth, where they'll find staples like Cub Foods and Caribou Coffee. In New Hope City Center, there's a Hy-Vee grocery store, an Applebee's for fast-casual sit-down meals, and resale items at Unique Thrift. Crystal Shopping Center has big-box options about 2 miles away. Although the city's farmers market went on hiatus for a few years, Kramer says it's back to its regular summertime schedule.

A central location beside Highway 169
One of Holiday Park's most attractive qualities is its central location. Minneapolis is less than 15 miles – or around a 20 minute commute — southeast via Highway 169 and Interstate 394. The Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport offers dozens of direct flight options and is about 25 miles away. Metro Transit routes connect New Hope to surrounding communities, and medical care is available at Robbinsdale Hospital, less than 5 miles away, a part of the North Memorial Health system.
