Northwood East
Affordable mid-century ramblers, split-levels and colonial revivals
Northwood East is mainly comprised of single-family homes featuring rambler, split-level, and Colonial Revival designs from the 1960s. Most are situated on quarter-acre lots with mature trees. Most homes have backyards with enough room for a patio plus a pool or some playground equipment. Tuck-under garages are common here, keeping in line with the neighborhood's midcentury development. The median price of a single-family home is $391,000, and homes typically sell between $325,000 and $500,000. Carmack says the area tends to be more affordable than similar communities nearby, making the market tight. “There’s low turnover as residents love living here,” he says. “It can make it difficult to find a home to purchase.” In fact, homes in Northwood East typically sell after only 10 days on the market, as compared to the national average of 45 days, and only 11 homes sold here during the past year.STEM, arts and Spanish options in Northwood East schools

Northwood Park is the only park within the neighborhood, but it packs a punch. The 65-acre park has zip lines, a tire swing, baseball diamonds, a basketball court, open green space and a lakeside playground. Basset Creek Regional Trail also runs throughout Northwood Park, providing a 7-mile paved path for walkers and bikers alike. There’s also a small lake where visitors can fish, canoe or kayak. It’s not uncommon for residents to spot turtles sunbathing on a lily pad or swimming through the creek. Bassett Creek runs through the south side of the park. The shallow creek is 12 miles long and its biggest branch is in New Hope. Northwood Lake is a shallow, 15-acre lake on the east side of the park. Visitors can fish from the shore for a variety of fish. New Hope is known for its 18 city parks spread over more than 200 acres, with nearly every home being within a quarter mile of a park.Have an omelet, pet cats and eat pizza in Northwood Park
A neighborhood breakfast staple is Fat Nat’s Eggs, a diner that serves breakfast and lunch daily. The menu features everything from French toast and pancakes to omelets. Note that there are no substitutions on the omelet and specialty dishes – with the menu reiterating that Nat “makes ‘em the way you should eat ‘em.” The Café Meow, which is a local cat café, lets patrons snuggle with rescue cats while enjoying a cat-themed drink, like the Bengal kittea (chai latte with nutmeg and butterscotch) and the calico (mocha with caramel and coconut). For dinner, Frankie’s Chicago Style serves up three different types of pizza – thin crust, deep dish pan pizza and Chicago-style stuffed pizza. For shopping, there’s a shopping center about a mile away with a Hy-Vee, chain restaurants, a Dollar Tree and hair and nail salons.
