Street signs in New Iberia often come in three languages: Spanish, for the original settlers who founded the city and named it after Spain’s peninsula; French, for the Cajuns who eventually made up most of the population; and English, for the United States, which acquired the city in the Louisiana Purchase. Like much of Southwest Louisiana, the city of 25,000 takes great pride in the mix of cultures, especially in its historic downtown. “We’ve got a lot of the Cajun culture, the French culture,” says Lana Soileau, a Realtor with Real Broker who has worked in the area for 13 years. “These people work harder than anybody you know, and they party harder than anybody you know.” Events like the Louisiana Sugar Cane Festival and the city's comparatively affordable housing set New Iberia apart from much of Acadiana.

A sweet celebration at the Louisiana Sugar Cane Festival
Every fall, New Iberia hosts the Louisiana Sugar Cane Festival, a nod to the region's agricultural roots. Organizers host several saccharine celebrations, including a 5k run and a concert series. The finale for the weekendlong bash includes a parade headlined by a scion of the sugar industry, crowned King Sucrose, paired with the winner of the festival pageant, Queen Sugar. “A lot of people come down for a festival — and then they don’t leave. We get a lot of transplants because of it,” Soileau says.
Opportunities for recreation in New Iberia
New Iberia is home to several parks, including City Park, which offers a pool, recreation center, playgrounds and sports fields, all alongside Bayou Teche. West End Park, on the opposite side of the city, has many of the same amenities.

Agriculture and oil industries in Acadiana
Several food-processing facilities call the city home, including hot sauces like Trappey’s Hot Sauce and Louisiana Hot Sauce. But, like much of the state, oil and gas is also a significant industry. “There are a lot of oil field-type people that live there,” Soileau says. “There are some big companies around there that people drive to.” Some residents commute to Lafayette, 20 miles northwest on Highway 90. Lafayette is also home to the nearest commercial airport, with flights to nearby hubs, including Dallas, Atlanta and New Orleans. Amtrak also serves New Iberia, with daily trains connecting to New Orleans, 145 miles east, and to Los Angeles much further to the west.
Reconstituted city police force and environmental factors
The New Iberia Police Department was disbanded in 2004. The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office took over jurisdiction until 2018, when the city reconstituted its police department. Crime statistics for New Iberia are not readily available.
The city experiences hot, humid summers and mild winters. Hurricanes, tropical storms and smaller systems can bring heavy rain and wind, primarily through the summer and early fall.
