Rebuilding and restoring original designs
In the years following Katrina, the streets of Broadmoor gradually became repopulated with the colorful Craftsman-style bungalows and cottages once found there. Many are completely new or have been heavily repaired yet still maintain many of the design elements that distinguish New Orleans culture, such as bright facades and covered porches. "It's sort of a microcosm of the city in the middle of the city," Wright says. A few newly built multi-story homes have also sprung up in recent years, often built as duplexes with a second-story balcony. Broadmoor's usual price range of $200,000 to $650,000 is a bit high for the New Orleans area, but compared to most other Uptown neighborhoods, its buy-in is relatively affordable.Walking paths and community gardens
The neighborhood's main green space is the Broadmoor Playspot, a small playground shaded by a thick canopy of old growth oak trees. If seeking a safe place for jogs or dog walks, the Broadmoor Arts and Wellness Trail on Napoleon Avenue offers a tree-shaded meander south to Claiborne Avenue. Community gardens have also become an instrumental part of the neighborhood's outdoor meeting places post-Katrina, such as the Broadmoor Food Pantry Garden located across from the Broadmoor Playspot. If it's raining, residents can try to book a reservation at La Cancha Indoor Soccer, or head east to the Rosenwald Recreation Center for an indoor workout.Top-ranked open enrollment at Eleanor McCain
Students in Broadmoor attend grades K-8 in their neighborhood at Andrew H. Wilson Charter School. The school earns a C-minus rating from Niche and offers multiple means of assistance to parents, such as transportation and a summer education program. For high school, students head south to Audubon, attending grades 9-12 at Eleanor McCain Secondary School, which has a B-minus Niche score and ranks in the city's top five open enrollment schools.New community centers and libraries provide endless activities
Following Katrina, residents of Broadmoor first sought to rebuild their neighborhood's most crucial services. "Now we have this great library and community center, and it's really, really well-used," Wright says. Events at both are in no short supply and are a great way to become involved in the community. Visitors of the Broadmoor Arts and Wellness Center can volunteer to help with food pantry handouts or enroll in group fitness classes, such as dance or martial arts. Meanwhile, right next door at the Rosa F. Keller Library, visitors can find community in the pages of a book with clubs such as the Crescent City Reading Buddies.
Central location affords quick trips
A bus route passes through the center of Broadmoor, offering trips south towards the river or downriver towards the Treme. But most residents rely on a car to get around, as the neighborhood's location roughly in the center of the city affords quicker access to both uptown and downtown New Orleans.Cider tastings and shrimp shareables on Broad Street
The heart of Broadmoor is a three-way intersection at Fontainebleau Drive, Napoleon Avenue and Broad Street. That's where locals head to snack on chipotle coconut shrimp from El Pavo Real, a beloved Mexican cantina. A few blocks east, businesses near Washington Avenue also offer meetup points, whether it be a breakfast from Laurel Street Bakery or a night cap from Broad Street Cider. Among the most popular businesses in Broadmoor is the Rendon Inn, whose old tavern atmosphere and big square bar is frequently packed with residents hungry for Southern foods and spirits. For pantry restocks, residents travel a half mile south to buy groceries at Freret Faire.Things to consider
Because the former marshland was drained long after the rest of the city, and because it is one of the city's lowest lying areas, Broadmoor's flood risk is greater than most neighborhoods. But as Wright points out, residents can apply for certain grants that provide funds to have their homes raised a few feet.
