NOLA's diamond in the rough neighborhood
Adjacent to Mid-City and tucked between Interstate-10 and Airline Hwy, Dixon is a small New Orleans neighborhood of intensely community-focused people. “We are a powerful, little bitty community,” says Brenda Lomax-Brown, a 17-year resident of Dixon and past President of the Hollygrove-Dixon Neighborhood Association. “Our neighborhood is one of the smallest in the city, and we’re sandwiched between highways, so we don’t have many businesses here.” In fact, Dixon is unique in its ability to thrive outside the city's hustle and bustle. “The neighborhood is like a suburb in the middle of the city,” Lomax-Brown says. “We don’t even have much traffic. It is a great place. We’re a diamond in the rough.”

Ongoing renovations to shotgun homes, Creole cottages
The neighborhood has seen a lot of renovation and even some new homes being built, says Rachel Van Voorhees, broker with Property New Orleans, LLC. “There’s a lot of renovation work, but there are also some original older homes that are still large, beautiful homes,” Van Voorhees says. Shotgun homes dominate the architectural landscape, though the occasional Creole cottage or Victorian-style home can be found. Some of the community’s renovations have come thanks to the work of community leaders such as Lomax-Brown, who attracted the attention of television host Mike Rowe and the NBA. After hearing about Lomax-Brown's work, Mike Rowe and his crew built the neighborhood a playground, and numerous stars from the NBA helped organize renovation projects throughout the neighborhood. Fully restored and new properties are now common in the area, and home prices range from $120,000 for a four-bedroom double shotgun needing work to $390,000 for larger, fully renovated homes.

Hollygrove-Dixon Neighborhood Association
Dixon has no parks, and reaching nearby Little Flower Playground or Conrad Playground means crossing Airline Hwy. “We didn’t even have a playground at all for our kids,” Lomax-Brown says. “The city wanted them to cross an eight-lane highway for that. But in 2017, the church came in and built this community center for us, and after that, Mike Rowe had a playground built there.” The Hollygrove-Dixon Neighborhood Association community center is also home to a community garden and a children’s garden, all of which Lomax-Brown says were made possible by the efforts of community members. “Nobody knew what Dixon was, didn’t even know where we were. But even during COVID, we continued with our meetings. We went virtual and didn’t slow down.”

Crafts, cooking demonstrations and field trips
Activity in the Dixon community revolves around the community center and its people. “We have a senior program where our seniors meet every Tuesday and Thursday,” Lomax-Brown says. “And let me tell you, I’m supposed to be on a diet, but I can’t be on a diet here. They have cooking demonstrations here, and we have big meals. Everybody brings all this food.” In addition to the food and camaraderie, the weekly meetings offer crafts and field trips, highlighting the heartfelt community atmosphere. “It’s a place where everybody knows your name,” says Lomax-Brown.

Independent grocer DG Market, dining in neighboring communities
Dixon residents do most of the cooking, Lomax-Brown says. “There are no good places to eat here. You’d have to leave the neighborhood for that.” In nearby Hollygrove, J&P Superette and DG Market provide smaller grocery options, while Costco gives residents bulk-buying options on Dublin Street. For dining and shopping, nearby neighborhoods Mid-City and Leonidas have plenty to choose from. Ajun Cajun in Leonidas offers Japanese-Cajun fusion with dishes such as the Yakiniku Po-Boy and Cajun Tuna Tataki Sashimi.

B-plus education at the International School of Louisiana
“We have a great school in the neighborhood,” Lomax-Brown says. “The International School of Louisiana, and it’s one of the best schools in the city.” The International School is a public charter school providing local students with kindergarten through 8th grade education. The school earns a B-plus on Niche and offers before and after-school childcare. Warren Easton Senior High School is the area’s main public high school offering and earns a C-plus on Niche.
Sandwiched between I-10 and Airline Highway
The neighborhood occupies less than a quarter-square-mile, and its gridded streets are lined with sidewalks, making it easy to get around on foot. Many homes have private driveways, but street parking is widely available for those without a driveway. Public buses run along the edges of the community, connecting it to the rest of the city, and Interstate 10 and Airline Highway are accessible for drivers.
