English Turn offers a suburban lifestyle in the Big Easy
Waterways and forested wetland surround English Turn, a secluded community about 10 miles southeast of downtown New Orleans. The neighborhood is named after its location along the English Turn, a bend in the Mississippi River where an English warship infamously turned around after falling for a bluff by a small French armada in 1699. While rural estates and farms sit near the river, most residents live in the private subdivision surrounding English Turn Golf & Country Club. “It’s the only gated golf course community that’s within 15 minutes of downtown,” says Victoria Zangara, a longtime New Orleanian and Realtor with Latter & Blum. “It’s a break away from the city. You almost feel like you’re living out in the country, but everything is still manicured,” says Zangara, who adds that the gated community often attracts out-of-town buyers looking for a suburban feel. Her parents relocated there in 2015. “My kids love going out there. They can ride their bikes to the pool. In other areas of New Orleans, blocks are shorter, and there is a lot of traffic.” In addition, English Turn receives a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, the lowest possible score.
Golf course homes and rural estates near the Mississippi River
English Turn’s gated golf course community of the same name features a range of home styles, from refined brick traditional homes and grand French Provincial designs to sleek contemporary forms. “They’re all renovated or brand new since Katrina,” Zangara says. These homes line winding concrete roads and rest on spacious, landscaped lots usually well over a third of an acre. Living space is ample, averaging nearly 4,000 square feet. However, some houses exceed 9,000 square feet. Properties come with monthly property owners’ association fees of around $245. Along English Turn’s rural roads sit ranch-style homes and cottages surrounded by trees. River Road is notable for its sprawling custom estates that face the Mississippi River. Most homes fall between $550,000 and $750,000, but particularly large homes range from $800,000 to $2.4 million.Hurricanes are a reality of living in New Orleans. A levee along the river offers some protection from potential storm surge and flooding. But Zangara notes, “English Turn didn’t flood during Katrina. It was also one of the few areas that didn’t lose power during Katrina because it has underground power lines.”
Outdoor recreation in English Turn
Golfing is the main pastime at the English Turn Golf & Country Club. A canal and several small lakes surround its 18-hole course, designed by Jack Nicklaus. Equipment repairs, tournaments and private lessons are available to members, who also have access to the clubhouse gym, an outdoor pool and tennis courts. Three playgrounds dot the surrounding gated subdivision, which also offers a community garden and walking trails. More recreation is available outside the gates. Audubon Wilderness Park, home to the Freeport-McMoRan Audubon Species Survival Center, is a birdwatching destination with a trail that loops through dense forest. More nature trails are nearby at the Woodlands Conservancy. Across the Intracoastal Waterway, the Mississippi River Trail runs along the western bank of the Mississippi River.
Neighbors connect year-round at the country club
The English Turn Property Owners Association and the country club host community events throughout the year, from crawfish boils and outdoor concerts to golf tournaments. “It’s a very community-oriented atmosphere,” Zangara says. “For Halloween, they have a little trailer. They’ll drive you from house to house to get candy.”
Public and private school options on the Westbank
The Orleans Parish School District, also known as NOLA Public Schools, serves English Turn and receives a C-plus overall rating from Niche. The district uses an open enrollment model. Nearby schools include Élan Academy Charter School, which earns a B-minus and offers prekindergarten through eighth grade. Students can move on to the C-plus-rated Edna Karr High. The school’s seven-time state championship-winning Cougars football team was featured in Algiers, America: The Relentless Pursuit, a Hulu Original documentary series in 2023. Zangara says St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic School is a popular nearby private option, which Niche does not yet rate.
Shopping and dining options across the Intracoastal Waterway
English Turn Golf & Country Club offers a formal main dining room with a rotating menu and a relaxed grill by the golf course. More restaurants and the closest retailers are available in the communities across the Intracoastal Waterway. Oakwood Center, an indoor mall offering dozens of name-brand and department stores, is about 8 miles away. Rouses Market, a less than 6-mile drive, is one of the closest grocery stores. “For boutique shopping, you go across the river to Magazine Street or Canal Place,” Zangara says.
English Turn’s Hollywood history and houses of worship
From television shows like "NCIS New Orleans" to movies, such as "22 Jump Street" and "Get Hard," English Turn has often served as a filming location. The community has hosted over a dozen productions.
English Turn hosts two houses of worship: Wat Wimuttayaram, a Thai Buddhist temple, and Chua Bo De, a Vietnamese Buddhist temple.
Driving or catching a ferry to downtown New Orleans
A community separated from the rest of the city by the Intracoastal Waterway, English Turn is car dependent. Woodland Highway is nearby and leads to U.S. Route 90 for commutes to the Central Business District, which is about 10 miles away. Algiers offers two ferries across the Mississippi River, connecting passengers to the French Quarter and Chalmette. Louis Armstrong New Orleans International is about a 24-mile drive.
