Little Woods has convenient commutes in New Orleans East
On the shore of Lake Pontchartrain, Little Woods was once a getaway for Big Easy residents venturing into New Orleans East. Until the 1990s, fishing camps and jazz halls stood on stilts over the water. These days, all that remains of the camps are their stilts. Little Woods now has a mainly residential character, with inland homes separated from the lake by a levee. Realtor Frank Williams of eXp Realty, who has over four decades of experience in New Orleans , says affordability and easy commutes are the neighborhood’s biggest selling points, especially for locals commuting to the Central Business District . “They have good public transit out there,” Williams says. “If you live out there and you work in the CBD, it’s pretty easy to catch public transit.”
Brick single-story homes make up most of the neighborhood's inventory
The median home sales price in Little Woods is $179,000, about $15,000 lower than nearby Pontchartrain Park and nearly half the city median of $325,000. Most homes in the area were built in the second half of the 20th century. Brick single-story homes are neatly laid out on small lots, flanking narrow residential streets. The neighborhood also offers duplexes, condos and apartments. Prices range from $40,000 to $140,000 for smaller properties that may require renovation, while well-maintained homes and larger houses can sell for $125,000 to $300,000.
Quick commutes to the CBD via I-10 or RTA buses
The Central Business District is 10 miles away from Little Woods, about 15 minutes by car or 50 minutes by bus. Interstate 10 runs along the southern edge of the neighborhood, giving residents easy access to the highway. New Orleans Lakefront Airport, located in Little Woods, primarily serves private and charter flights, but Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is only 20 minutes away in Kenner . LCMC Health New Orleans East Hospital has an emergency room less than a mile from the neighborhood.
Neighborhood charter schools and private options
Students can typically apply for enrollment at any charter school in New Orleans, most of which are managed by the Orleans Parish School Board and NOLA Public Schools. Elementary options in the neighborhood include ReNEW Dolores T. Aaron Academy, which receives a C-minus grade from Niche and serves kindergarten through eighth grade. Livingston Collegiate Academy, rated C-plus, serves ninth through 12th grade and connects students with collegiate summer programs at universities throughout New Orleans, including Tulane University. Private schools are also popular throughout the city. Lake Castle Private School, right in the neighborhood, gets a B rating for kindergarten through eighth grade.
Recreation on the lake, at neighborhood playgrounds or in Brown Park
Lake Pontchartrain borders the neighborhood to the north. While most of the lakefront is unseen and inaccessible due to the levee, the South Shore Harbor Marina offers water access next to the small lakefront airport. Boaters can rent boat slips by the day or the year; the marina even has facilities for seafarers who live on their vessels. Several parks are located within the neighborhood, including the Kenilworth Playground. Joe W. Brown Park is less than a mile away and features sports fields, an indoor recreation center and boardwalk trails through the woods. “Joe Brown Park had quite a bit of upgrades to it,” Williams says. “That’s in pretty close proximity to Little Woods. It’s not hard to get there.”
Community events and holiday celebrations nearby
As in much of New Orleans, Mardi Gras is a tentpole event. The Krewe of Nefertiti parade rolls past Joe W. Brown Park in New Orleans East, along with dozens of other parades throughout the season. The park also hosts holiday celebrations like the Halloween Spooktacular and the Easter Eggstravaganza, plus movie nights in summer.
Markets and restaurants, plus more across I-10
Small markets and eateries are scattered throughout the neighborhood, generally along Hayne Boulevard or Morrison Road. Castnet Seafood, a staple in New Orleans East, serves fried fish and shrimp alongside fresh catches for shoppers to take home and cook themselves. Deanie’s on Hayne is an unassuming spot for po’boys and gumbo. The Read Supermarket has groceries, and big-box stores like Walmart and Lowe’s sit just across I-10.
Lower flood risk than much of New Orleans
Although Lake Pontchartrain borders the neighborhood, the flood risk in Little Woods is relatively low for New Orleans, thanks in large part to the levees that protect the area. Nevertheless, certain areas may be in FEMA-designated flood zones, where flood insurance is mandatory. The overall CAP Index Crime Score for Little Woods is 9 out of 10, higher than the national average of 4.

We experience frequent rain and thunderstorms mostly due to the fact that we are a subtropical climate. Hurricanes and tropical storms don't occur every year but they are frequent. For the rest of the time we have sunny and humid days.

Little Woods is filled with an abundance of people willing to protect and love one another, but the neighborhood isn't always the safest. Gunshots can often be heard at night, cars are constantly being broken into, and in the far distance you can always count on hearing a siren or two. Despite that, I can trust my neighbors will always have my back.

Pros: I love that we are minutes from Lake view , Chalmette and Slidell where all the shopping is. It's peaceful, quiet and have lovely homes throughout the neighborhoods. Will be even better when it comes back full pace. Cons: Since Katrina, the city has not helped to develop Little Woods back to how the suburb was to its rich economic value.
