Milneburg offers quiet living near universities and the lake
Close to two universities, historic areas and Lake Pontchartrain, the New Orleans neighborhood of Milneburg is a residential haven for those seeking a true bedroom community. Named after a nearby resort town, Milneburg has been immortalized in jazz songs and a historic, nearly 200-year-old lighthouse on the University of New Orleans campus. Almost as old as Southern University at New Orleans, which was founded in 1880 and moved nearer the lake in the 1950s. One of the city's oldest areas, the neighborhood saw rapid growth in the 1840s with restaurants, saloons and clubs opening one after another. Today, the area is much quieter, with little commercial activity to distract residents from the pleasures of home. Fifteen minutes from Downtown New Orleans, Milneburg is a charming community providing easy access to everyday essentials and several major roadways.

Homes range from 1960s ranchers to post-Katrina builds
Driving along Milneburg’s curving streets, you’ll soon notice just how much architectural variety there is here. Renovated doubles, cottages and raised foundation houses sit amongst Euro-modern styles, traditional four squares and ranchers. Contemporary, stucco, and custom-built homes also dot the area. Off-street parking and fenced yards are common, and many original houses were built in the 1960s and 1970s. Prices here range from $150,000 to $500,000. Houses in Milneburg are an incredible mixture of ages and styles. Badly flooded during Hurricane Katrina, many homes were rebuilt or remodeled after the disaster. Local Realtor Betsy Birdsong with EXP Realty says, “Many homes are new since Katrina. But there’s a mixture. There are different stages of building, and the oldest of the newer houses would’ve been built around 2010.”

Gentilly Fest brings music and family fun each October
You can’t talk about Milneburg without mentioning Gentilly Fest. The annual three-day festival takes place each October and raises money for the growth and maintenance of Gentilly, the name for the section of New Orleans that contains Milneburg and other neighborhoods. Local restaurants serve up traditional favorites, and some surprises, too. Arts and crafts booths line the grounds, and live music pours from the gospel tent and the main stage. The event has a kids’ village with pony rides, pottery making and more. The free festival began in 2008 and promises a fun weekend for visitors each year.

Since New Orleans is located below sea-level, flooding is super bad in my area. Since we are on the coast we also have lots of problems with Hurricanes. We also get an occasional tornado
